More 50 yard work, PCP style

Post by North Country Gal » Fri May 14, 2021 11:13 am

We've finally had a day or two of only light breezes, so time to stretch the air gun shooting to 50 yards, again. This time, I put our new Daystate Huntsman Revere 177 to work.

The Revere is state of the art in a PCP hunting rifle with its side-lever action and 13 round magazine. It's also light enough for me to shoot offhand, though I've been only shooting from a rest so far for the sake of accuracy testing. Right now, it wears a big heavy Bushnell 6-18x50 scope for the sake of that accuracy testing, but now that I am done accuracy testing, I'll be switching to a lighter scope for the sake of offhand shooting.

Accuracy is what it's all about with PCP air rifles, so let's take a look at what a top notch hunting PCP can do at 50 yards under reasonable shooting conditions (only a slight breeze).

My worst group of the session, compliments of me not waiting for the wind to calm or me shooting a bit fast and sloppy.

And my best group, me giving it my best and being patient and watching the wind flag. Pellet is the H&N Baracuda Match 10.6 gr.

This is the kind of accuracy I expect from a top of the line PCP, so very pleased, of course. This also makes a good comparison with my 50 yard work with my very best spring piston rifles. With my springers, my worst group with the PCP at half inch would be a wall hanger and a group that I would get only once in a great while over the course of several shooting sessions. With the PCP, getting half inch groups at 50 yards is pretty routine. Not that I don't enjoy the challenge of shooting my springers (I actually enjoy that very much), but it is nice to have a PCP when I want to shoot these small groups and relax a bit :) Best of all, I can just step out in the backyard and do it on a moment's notice.

Will be shooting the springers at 50, next, to see if i can get some of those half inch wall hangers.

Great report! Those quarter inch groups at 50 yards is not easy. Shooting at a moment’s notice is what backyard shooting is all about.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
