Hatsan 87 QE Vortex Air Rifle

Post by brianpa » Sun Mar 14, 2021 9:18 pm

Are they any good? I have read a lot of reviews and most are very good but there are so many different ones out there.
I want to use it for squirrel hunting and plinking.
Thanks for any insight.

I've never had any experience with Hatsan. I read a lot of reviews this week before responding to your post. I don't think you can go wrong with either the .22 or .177 versions for squirrels or plinking.
If you get it, let us know how you like it.

I'm in the same boat as Dave, given that I've never owned one or shot one. I do know that Hatsan is a very popular brand in the air gun community, though.

My advice before buying is to make sure this is the type of air gun you want, i.e. a piston gun. Don't be taken in by the marketing hype about gas piston guns being easier to shoot than spring piston guns. You still have to learn the technique of shooting a piston gun to get the max accuracy. A gas piston gun still has recoil, but the recoil has a different feel to it.

Like all powerful piston guns, this is going to be a heavy gun to carry around in the woods. On the other hand, weight will help tame the recoil.

Moderators on a piston gun will help reduce the muzzle noise, but they can't eliminate the action noise. This gun won't be as quiet as a PCP with a moderator, but it will be quieter than the same gun without one.

I wouldn't expect much from the cheap scope that comes with the gun, so do budget for a better scope, just in case.

For sure, though, this Hatsan has all the power you will need for small game hunting and then some.

I bought it and so far I really like it. The scope is not very good so I am going to replace it.
I have a older Crossman Quest 1000X that is a springer and I could never get it to shoot very good but I am going to try some other pellets and I don't care for the amount of noise it makes. Now this gas piston is a lot quieter and it doesn't have much recoil at at all.

That's great, brian. Would love to see a range report if you get a chance.

Glad you like it Brian. What caliber did you get? I'm with NCG. Let's have a range report if you can.
Here is a link to my review of the then fairly new Benjamin NP2. http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=160
I really like it. I hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of yours when you get a better scope. Keep us posted.

I will. I've been trying some different pellets at about 20yds. So I will get some pics. And a report. It is a 22cal.
