Need Help

Post by brm4450 » Sun Mar 14, 2021 2:36 pm

I have a granddaughter that is on the 4-H shooting sports team. It meets once a week. In the mean time she practices with her pink Red Rider, she has really outgrown it. I was wondering if some of you could lead me in the direction of the right type airgun I could purchase for her. She is 10 will be 11 this summer. She is my Henry shooting buddy, she calls me up to go range.

Sorry for the late response. Didn't see your post for some reason.

My advice would be to check with her 4-H shooting coach as to what rifle is used in that competition. A lot of 4H chapters get a break on prices for their kids.

For 10 meter competion, guns like the Daisy 853 are very popular and you can get refurbished ones through the CMP at bargain prices. Again, check with her coach, though, before you buy anything. For most of these competitions, the gun model has to be from an approved list to keep the shooters on a level playing field.

Let me add that I think it's GREAT that she is shooting in a league. Congrats to you both.

I would echo exactly what NCG said. Make sure it's on the approved list if there is a list. If not, go with a refurbished 853 from CMP. Get two, one for you too. That way you both can shoot together. They are fantastic bargains and great shooting rifles.

Ditto on checking. I donated a youth rifle to the local youth shooting discipline at the range and later found out they couldn’t use it.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it. Checked out what was being used and ended up with this:

Yes, the 499B. I've often thought about getting one and I may still get one. I know some adults who are serious target shooters who use them in the house. It's actually very accurate at the 5 meters competition where it is used. No kidding, the 499B is a true target BB gun with serious sights. It is used with high grade BB ammo designed for this rifle.

Dave's suggestion is very good. At the price of a 499B might as well get two.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
