I almost ordered this rifle this afternoon and then realized I ordered one this morning. I think I’m going senile but that’s for another thread.

What did we do before YouTube? I’ve found several videos on shooting the QB and even how to increase the velocity.
I also bought this kit so it was good to find this video.

I even found a video on how to shoot it in colder weather. It was mostly about keeping the rifle and cylinders warm.

I think you made a great decision with the QB78. It's been around for a long time and has a ton of avid followers. Do also check out the ArcherAirguns folks who specialize in this gun.

Are you going to scope yours? If so, I strongly recommend a scope with an AO that focuses down to 10 meters. It's a must for shooting up close like that. Even a typical 22 scope without an AO will have parallax lots of parallax at 10 yards and will not focus well. Does not have to be springer air gun rated for use on a CO2. That means you can pick up a nice affordable air rifle scope with an AO, like the Hawke Vantage 2-7x I use on our Crosman CO2 pistol. Cost me just under $100. Very nice scope. A straight 4x will even be cheaper.

Yeah, using a scope for 10 yard shooting might sound silly to some, but I do it all winter long in our basement air gun shooting. I promise you that it will make a difference when using those tiny 10 meter air rifle targets. Well worth it.

I’m not sure if I want to scope it or not. I’m also looking at the QB78S which has the upper and lower picatinny rail. That way I could also easily add a bi-pod. A PCP is still in my thoughts and I might scope it instead. It would shoot better in colder weather.

A side focus would really be a must for the reasons you mentioned Joanie.

My friend in TX shoots prone a lot and it really interested me. Of course he is shooting hi-power out to about 700 yards.

Gene, I have a Beeman QB78 in .177 with a generic red dot on the top. It is a lot of fun to shoot and is nicely accurate at 10m in my basement. I haven't taken it outside to do anything with it, but it's trigger is crisp and it was inexpensive. (The gun was $99.00) I picked it up at a hardware store off the beaten trail on the way to camp one day a couple years ago. It's a lot of fun. I'm sure you will like it.

No word on it’s availability yet. Guess it’s still scheduled to ship by the end of the month.

I received the rifle today and unboxed it after waiting two seconds for it to come up to room temperature. My plan was to wait an hour however the kid in me couldn’t wait after watching all day for the UPS truck. Even Little Girl couldn’t wait. Arizona Air really packages their shipments right. The pellets I received a few days ago was also packed secure. I was surprised at how much oil was on it and that the oil was black. I’ll need to clean it more before shooting. I bought the Archer XP Tune Kit and am wondering if I should crony it before I do the modification? If I do I’ll need to wait for the temperature to get above 60 degrees so it would be an accurate before and after comparison.

This owners manual is short but complete. I read every warning on every page as this is all new to me. I’m amazed at the length of pull compared to the Avanti. The quality and fit seems high for an inexpensive item. I would say it is made of cheap materials that was cast, stamped (molded) and machined to very tight specs. These sights have to go. I’m thinking of replacing the rear sight with an adjustable peep and maybe throw a globe up front. Currently the QB II is in my cart but I haven’t purchased it yet. If I get it I might just put it’s sights on the QB78 because I also have a Hawke Vantage 2-7x32 AO Mil-Dot scope in the cart.

Be sure to clean any oil out of the bore. I used a 177 cal bore snake.

As for the tune up, I'd just do some shooting with the gun, first, to get to know it and how it performs. Your call, though.

My vote would be for the scope. At 2x, it would be easier to use than a peep and/or open sights and with a scope, you can shoot in any lighting conditions. Don't have to wait for a day with good lighting. Be less fatiguing for the yes, too. Adding that Hawke won't be much more expensive than adding different irons sights, anyway.

I have one of those Hawke 2-7 Vantage scopes. Decent little scope for the money and would work fine on any CO2 gun. Adding a scope would be a cinch. You don't need anything fancy for rings. Standard 22 rings will work fine on that 11mm rail.

That's a good plan, Gene. I have doubles on a couple of air guns, one with a peep and one with a scope.

I think I want to go with the QB78S (synthetic) because the stock has an upper and lower picatinny rail. That way I can easily add a scope and a bipod.

But I’m also thinking of getting the QB II instead of the s because it’s a semi-auto. I want shoot prone.

The QB II arrived yesterday after being held up by weather. The scope was to go on the II and the fiber sights on it were to go on the 78 but they are not interchangeable so the 78 is scoped. I also put a Harris bi-pod on it. The II really has a nice feel and balance to it. The stock is a wonder to shoulder but also feels good prone. I have a nice area under cover where I can lay down my shooters mat and bought both of these for three-position shooting.

Now to wait for warmer dryer weather.

Most of the objects outside my windows are beyond the 20 yards of the backyard range so I switched to aiming inside from the prone position. This was purpose built for prone so it’s something I need to workout before loading up with ammo. The mat and bipod really makes it comfortable and steady. Focusing down to close distances really limits the depth of field. Gotta set the parallax just right. When set up correct I can see movement during a heartbeat. It would be nice to be able to go to a real range but until that happens I’m shooting when I can at home. How does the song go “if you can’t be with the one you love then love the one your with”.

I am very impressed with what you are doing with those rifles, Gene. You are going to have one heck of a lot of fun when the shooting starts.

I have to agree with NCG. I like the bipod. When spring hits, I think there will be a few empty air canisters lying about.
