Bullet Casting

Post by Jdl447 » Tue Mar 22, 2016 11:05 pm

New member here. More of lurker than a poster.
Just started casting for my .357 with a lee .125 RFN mold.
I shoot em as cast with Alox tumble lube.
Any other casters and reloaders here ?

I don't cast myself, but I've got a buddy that does. He is passionate about it and casts up enough bullets to keep both of us (and several others) completely stocked. A majority of my handloads use his cast bullets. Everything from 95 gn for .380 all the way up to heavy 44 and 45 cal.
Recently he's been experimenting with coatings and I've got some awfully colorful bullets loaded up. Everything from flame red to zombie green. Even copper gas checks on dark green bullets to make "Packer" bullets (I'll save those in case of a "viking" invasion).

Yea I've read about powder and hi-tek coating and all that,
But me, I'm cheap a $20.00 mold and a $5.00 bottle of Alox gets me on target.
Maybe in about 5 years when I retire I'll get into it more.
God willing.

I started loading and casting in 1969. I remember my first .357 swc slugs were pure lead and no sizing. I asked the dealer why my Colt Trooper was leading so badly. He asked what I was sizing to and I said What? Sold me a lyman 450 sizer luber that I still have= no more leading.

I'm not completely sold on the coating either, but so far results have been good. Coating has helped eliminate a chronic leading problem in my Redhawk. I've only fired a few hundred in various calibers but have loaded probably 6-700. Nice thing is no messy lube or lead on the fingers when handling.
