Missouri 405 coated

Hello,

I ordered a bunch of the Missouri 405 gr coated bullets for the 45-70. The price seems good and what I have read about the coating sounds promising. I have the same coating on some of my 10mm cast 200 gr Underwood that shoot great- so do have limited experience with them. I am understanding that the loads for these would be same as for regular cast...if my internet research has brought me to the correct answer on that anyway. I was hoping to use this bullet for hunting too if the meplat is of sufficient proportions (whatever that is...judge by eye probably!?).

Any additional thoughts, suggestions, or tips on using these would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Dancote, I love the Missouri 405 Buffalo High Tek for my 45/70 I load over either 36.5 grns of IMR4198 or 43.5 grn of H322.

IMR Choreographed at 1529 FPS 11FPS standard deviation, and for the H322 1626 FPS with 5FPS standard deviation.

No, I am an upland game hunter now. My wife presented me with my Henry Side Gate 45-70 last Christmas. I have put many rounds through it and love the rifle and the caliber. Since Missouri labels it "Buffalo" I would assume that it would preform well for you. Let us know what you work up and how it preforms.

I got the box of bullets and they seem like they'll be great. But, I do notice that when I crimp at the top of the groove they come out to be 2.53 rather than 2.55" OAL. I hope that doesn't cause any issues with pressure. I was going to start fairly low with IMR 4198 at around 33 gr and work up if needed from there. Hopefully they will be alright. I am also learning about "slugging" the barrel which, unfortunately, I didn't do before I ordered all these. Hope the barrel is going to like the .459" 405s as much as yours does .!

I think you will find that the MB's will work well for you, they sure have for me ! In fact just ordered 500 more rounds of the 405's and 500 more of the 180's for my .357.

So how did the 405's work in your 45-70? Are you getting OK groupings? Just curious. I ordered some Missouri coated and Grizzly gas checks and will possibly go back to loading Hornady FTX for hunting. I really like the accuracy of those.

This will give you a foundation, the H322 and IMR 4198 both patterned well, 322 a little better velocity and performance. I use Starline Brass.
The Hunters is a cast bullet I had purchased to try, by far the Missouri Hi Tek out preformed it. :

So how did the 405's work in your 45-70? Are you getting OK groupings? Just curious. I ordered some Missouri coated and Grizzly gas checks and will possibly go back to loading Hornady FTX for hunting. I really like the accuracy of those.

Make sure you keep that FTX brass seperate from the other 45-70 brass you might have or buy. That FTX brass is shorter than regular 45-70 brass. If you need any help getting started there are a bunch of us on here including myself that will be happy to help.

Great info! And yes I left the Hornady alone for now and cleaned and deprimed and measured/deburred the Starline

I am very happy with the MBC 405 grain #1 Buffalo coated bullets. I use 30.0 gr. of H4198 powder, which is a high end trapdoor load.

I also use the Hornady 300 gr JHP bullet over 45.0 grains of H4198 for jacketed loads and it performs well also.

Reloader 7 and a Hornady 350gr Flat point will put a smile on your face I bet.

YUP RT, they sure are. They preformed well, but the MB Buffalo Hi Tek preformed better.

Ok, thanks r-n-g. I got a box of those to try along with a couple hundred from T&B bullets. That puts me at enough 250gr .45 bullets for my Colts, I no longer have to worry if I'll run low. Now, I just have to empty some brass!

I actually got some Hunters for my colts as well. Just have not had the chance to load any yet. I too have to empty some brass . . . a truly heavy burden my frined !

I couldn't imagine them not working well.
Nver shot an of those, but their pugnose has shot well for a number of members, myself included.
Plus a couple different smaller 45's and 44 bullets.
