After putting the last coat of paint on my truck gas tank today I built some cartridges. It was a rainy day so good for handloading.

Last week I cleaned the brass.




Today 1st I built about 60+ 45/70's in 3 weights. I've liked the Missouri bullet companies Hard coated bullets so far. The rounds I built were very mild. Now that I know what to expect from them I upped the heat a little. Both 300's and 405's were 10 gr unique before. My results have mirrored the load data I'm using very well. So for each bullet weight I used the load of Unigue that showed the best groups in their data.

Today I built MBC 300's with 12 grs.
Then I built some 405's with 11 grs.
Then I tried some Berry's plated 350 gr. I loaded these to 11 gr as well.


Then I prepped a couple of hundred 44 mag cases. The unloaded ones are ready to prime and load.

I built 25 44 mags with a 240 gr Berry's plated bullets riding on 7 gr Unique. I next built the same thing with 7.5gr. I'm also going to build 25 more each of 8 + 8.5 grains. Then I'll start over and build 25 each in matching cartridges but with the 240 gr Berry's target hollow points. That way I can test the load for accuracy and speed. And compare the RNFP to the Plated target HP at 4 different levels each. Out of those 8 loads I should find something that works good for me. Then I'll build a bunch of the winner.

And then you get to do it all over again. That's the great part about shooting and reloading.

Built some more 44 and prepped some more cases this am. Then to the Golden Boy to the range this afternoon to shoot some 22.

Working up load data and running them threw a chronograph is as much fun as shooting. I, myself sometimes, hate when that process is finished cause of the self gratification ones gets from there hard work. You have jumped into this reloading hobby with both feet and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, with in a year, I see you getting into boolit casting for your 45/70. Myself, I don't cast yet, but I've already started collecting lead....so, I'll probably start in the next year or two.

I doubt it. My BIL is real into casting. But I really don't want to. I've already got way to many labor intensive interests.

I can attest that Squatch's loads are sweet. I shot 3 of his 45-70 loads and couldn't believe how little recoil they had. In fact, I wouldn't have believed that they were 45-70s if I hadn't loaded the rifle myself. Accuracy was good. Of the 6 rounds (2 with each load), I had one flier and the other 5 were all in a 2 inch group at 50 yrds. Not bad for the first time with the rifle and shooting 3 different loads. Hopefully, he will soon put up a range report with pics.

Looks like Berry's has the plated 45/70 bullet back in stock. I just ordered some more.
