DsGrouse, good info. Which Lyman manual is that? I have the #50 Lyman and I don't have the BE-86 data in it. Maybe the cast manual? Thanks.
BE-86 is a good powder that I'm starting to like.

Lyman 51, I have the cast one also I will look and see if it is there also.
I have both the 50 and 51, but use the 51 quite a bit more.
The Alliant web page says BE86 max is 6.7 for 200gr lsc.. So I see why there is some reason for concern.
I just checked the hornaday and lyman cast book. BE86 is not in either of those.
BE86 is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. It meters very well, works in my 40 sw, 45lc, 38spl, 357 mag and 45 acp.

Loaded up 20 .357 cartridges for use in a Smith K frame. I used 7.0 grains of Unique and a Hornady 158 gr XTP. Way too much bullet for what I want and this load would be better served with a plated or coated bullet but the XTP was all I had on hand. Velocity should come in around 950 - 1000 fps. I have a buddy who wants to shoot his new pistol so hopefully we’ll meet up next week and the indoor range. If I like this load I’ll probably pick up some cheaper bullets and load some more up. I used the nickel cases to keep these low velocity rounds separate from my standard loads.

Hatch, I use the same load (and XTP) for my .357 pistols. I also use the Nickle for my pistols only and brass for my Henry loads to keep them separated. Looks like factory new !

Good to hear, I’m looking forward to unloading the cases next week. I took a look at Berry’s plated bullets and read they can withstand velocities up to 1250 fps so this load should work great with the Berrys. I have loaded up a bunch of Berrys in 38 special cases (still have some) but I’m out of them. I’ve seen them around locally so next time I’m in the LGS that stocks bullets I’ll pick up a box.runnin n gunnin wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 10:29 amHatch, I use the same load (and XTP) for my .357 pistols. Trimmed down some brass for my 444marlin for Hornady FTX 265gr they need to be alot shorter it just feels wrong. Will load them with vithavouri n120 need to be above 2000fps to be legal for all game it seems to be a midload according to loaddata from Hornady. Will probably start a loadladder from 39grain and upwards to see where the precision is/good enough. Hopefully it performs well on roedeer, wildboar, moose and bear (if needed) within 80meters.
Also loaded up some Cast 265gr RNFP bullets, about the same load as the FTX, will also try loading with Vithavouri N110 with this bullet. I use this bullet with my 44mag Henry performs well in the 1500fps range. Hopefully performs well above 2000fps with little to no leading. They are sized to .432, hardness 16bhn, gaschecked and lubed with 50/50 molygrease/beeswax.

I believe it will do a number on any of those animals you mentioned.
The ftx makes a mess once it connects with bone, I quit using them after the first deer I took with one of mine.
I'd bet good money on those big ole cast for a hunter.
I load a 265 gr jsp that would definitely work, and a 300+gr cast that is bad to the bone also.
Good luck.
Will look for a range report.

Re: What did you do at your reloading bench today?
ruhler,
I found the velocity restriction for hunting very interesting. Is it for moose only or deer and boar as well? Is it country-wide?
With the 444 Marlin there are not a lot of loads that will get you safely enough into the 2000 fps range to pick from. Although, as Vaquero mentioned, a 265 jsp would get you there using N130 assuming at least a 24" barrel (from the Hornady manual and N133 from the Lyman Manual)
Otherwise, I use a 300 grain XTP, but I don't have the minimum velocity restriction. The FTX looks like a good choice. I've not used them on deer since the 300 does the trick for me and no need to keep cases separate.
Good luck.
