Another crappy day in Arizona

Post by runnin n gunnin » Sun Dec 01, 2019 7:32 pm

Well, here we are with another crappy day in Arizona. 31 at sunrise, sunny and 60 most of the day.

Thought I would use the time and prep for the family onslaught over Christmas, daily range days in the desert.

Started up with 38s. My son and his wife both just bought Vaqueros and she a birdshead Ruger. Son also wanted some 38 to run through his Henry.

346 rounds (don't know where I lost four pieces of brass :o ) All are 4.6 grains of Bullseye pushing 158 grain Hornady XTP JHP. (except for 22 Sierra flat nose 148 grain in the back). Prepped and primed another 200 rounds of 45 Colt to drop powder in tomorrow.

Now its time for a Jameson and enjoy the sunset!

Considering we were at -15F the other day, 60 sound pretty good.

All kidding aside, I feel for all of you in the ice and cold. Did some work in Anchorage a few years back at 21 below zero, still trying to warm up!
I have a lot of respect for those who not only can function, but have the tenacity to go out and shoot. RESPECT !

It just seems wrong to see snow drifting across my sunset, think Ill shoot some Christmas lights !

Have in-laws that live in Prescott AZ. They sent us pictures of recent snow with cactus in the scene.

Prescott is beautiful country. Arizona is a really misunderstood state, not all desert and cactus. We have open desert to Alpine meadows. Very diverse geography, just like Oregon.
The Prescott V.A. is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful architectural facilities around, originally named Fort Whipple, it has served as a tactical base for the United States Cavalry during the Indian Wars of 1864 to 1882 transitioning to the headquarters of the Arizona Volunteers (Rough Riders) during the Spanish American War.
I hope you get along with your in-laws and make a road trip !

I have a cousin who lives in Tucson.
He was whining to me the other day about it being a 'cool 55 with rain' !!

Haaaa ! Tucson is my home town.

In his defense though, when it rains here, it pours. This is a riverbed, normally dry, the day after a one day rain last week. Water is about six feet deep in the center.

I hope to visit Payson and Tucson in the not to distant future. We're on lazy search to find some place warmer to live.

Payson is beautiful country as is the Verde Valley from Sedona to Camp Verde.

If you travel to the area and are a history buff of the west, make some time to tour the Fort Verde State Park in Camp Verde. This was the Fort that settled the area and is a really interesting museum that includes the original Company Headquarters, C/Os residence, Field Physician and officers residences, etc. Well worth the time. (and I can give you a great place to eat if you like Mexican food, and another one that the food is OK, but the margaritas are the best around).

There is also a very nice campground in Camp Verde, Distant Drums, that I stay at when I am going to Moab.

We've been talking about the 45-70, the pict below is from the Museum.

Pictures I've seen it's bit like some of the semi dryer areas of Oregon not where it is wet on West side of the Cascades and high desert far east.

About year and 1/2 ago we spent a bunch of time in Prescott, Cottonwood and Sedona. Really liked Sedona, but the weekend tourist traffic up from Phoenix pretty much choked up the roads.
