Brass Question

Post by JEBar » Sun May 29, 2016 7:46 pm

HSM Cowboy Action Ammunition http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product. ... 25381bb9bd isn't factory loaded with as strong of a powder charge as full power hunting ammo .... would there be any concerns with reloading it with full hunting power loads ?

My bud buys a bit of their ammo in 44 and 45/70. He doesn't reload so he gives me the brass. So far it's all been Starline brass. Load away! :D

No, the brass should be just fine.
As long as you are using it in a firearm that is capable of handling it.
Work up safely and have at it.

For what it's worth they seem to make some pretty good ammo. What I've shot of it was consistent.

good to know .... any more, 99% of our handloads are practice level .... for our rifles and center fire pistols we try to keep somewhere around 50 full power, hunting level rounds on hand .... further, for hunting level ammo we historically start with new brass but when new brass wasn't available I have no aversion to using any brass we have on hand

10-4 .... from a liability standpoint, it would seem prudent for all manufactures to produce casings that meet whatever the industry standard may be .... in reading the info Starline provides about its casings, they make a point that they have a special way of producing their brass but I haven't seen any comment on standards .... when it comes to ordering new, empty brass, I prefer Starline

I'm looking forward to firing some in our Henry 44 .... our light handloads do OK out to 75 yards but really drop off between there and 100 .... if the HSM loads hold up better at that distance I plan to run some through our chronograph and see if we need to up the speed on practice rounds

I would invite him to go shooting every weekend if you get keep his brass :D :D :D . My buddy in Ca was on the Navy shooting team and got all his ammo free to practice with for his M-14 and it was all LC match 7.62 [308 Winc ] all I needed to was to pick it up . He wouldn't take any money for the brass or pick it up . When he left on the ground when he left the range for any one to pickup . :D

We shoot together regularly. He's on here just not very active. He's the one that got me into Henry's!
