I emailed technical support at Henry Repeating Arms and asked what the Bore diameter was, and what bullet diameter they recommended. I got a reply from a guy named Tom from Henry Tech Support:

“I’m sorry, we can’t advise and handloads and recommend shooting factory loads only in our rifles.

We use a .366 bore diameter with a .376 groove diameter on our .38-55 bbls.”

My new question is “Shouldn’t the bore diameter be greater than the groove diameter?????”

The groove diameter is measured to the bottom of the rifling lands so it would be the greater of the 2. Proper bullets for mine anyway are .377 and mine shoots that bullet in a gas check really well. I think there is still a post in range reports with a target I shot off the bags at 50 yards. Iron Sights.
