Berry's bullets.

Post by Squatch » Wed May 25, 2016 1:53 pm

I've had pretty good luck lately with Berry's 240 gr, copper plated, round nose flat point in 44 mag. Has anyone here used the target Hollow point version of that bullet? Do you like it?

How about the 45/70 bullet they make? It's supposed to be good to 1,700 fps.

I need to order some more bullets soon. :D

Can't help with the Berry's. I've been using Xtreme for my .357. I really like their triple plated HP. It is supposed to be good up to 1500 fps. This bullet with IMR 4227 makes for a very accurate round. Accuracy is pretty decent using target loads with powders like TItegroup, HP38 or Universal.

I have used the single plated TC in target loads in .357. I've been using max lead data. Accuracy is much poorer in .38 loads using the TC and max lead loads. Probably need to be pushed a little harder. I'm a little nervous about running more than this, even though you are supposed to be able to go to mid jacketed data. BIG difference in the max lead and mid jacketed for a lot of powders.

I wish there was more plated specific data out there.

I'm mostly using them for light loads of under 1,100 fps.

selection of a bullet is kind of like selection of an vehicle .... some like a Ford, some like a Chevy .... some folks can get rather heated in discussions about them .... for me there are two types of bullets .... one for paper punching .... one for serious hunting/shooting .... granted, serious hunting quality bullets are usually more expensive than paper punchers but they can most certainly be used for that purpose .... in selecting a hunting level bullet for use in a Henry, I believe it requires one that is tougher than standard 44's that perform well in pistols .... the reason being the additional muzzle velocity generated by the longer barrel of a rifle .... for hunting bullets I use Nosler 44 JHP's ... in their latest reloading manual they state their bullets are designed to handle the additional speed from being used in a rifle .... according to posted prices they are about cent cheaper than Barry's .... for paper punching I use Oregon Trail Laser-Cast grain bullets (buy ours at Cabala's) for about half the cost of the jacketed .... just as one and punch paper with the higher priced jacketed bullets, one could certainly deer hunt with the Oregon lead bullets

I just ordered 500 more of the ones I've been using in 44 mag. I also got sample packs of their 45/70 bullets and the target hollow points.

I've been impressed with the coated 45/70 bullets from Missouri Bullet company. So I bought some of their 44's to try as well.

And I picked up a few JHP's at a show today for HOT loads.

If you ever get an itch to target shoot your Henry rifle and don't want to pay the Nosler price. Zero makes a jacketed bullet that can handle a rifle velocity. I've shot them with my Henry rifle and chronograph them with a average fps of 1760 using W296/H110 powder. The Zero bullet is not as accurate as the Nosler bullet, but it's pretty close. The Nosler bullet is gonna be hard to beat cause it's a competition bullet. It's just an over-all high quality bullet. For me, I only use the Nosler bullet and the Zero bullet in my Henry 44 Mag rifle. I generally use the Zero bullet for target shooting and the Nosler bullet for hunting but I still use the Nosler bullet for target shooting cause I have a hard time keeping the Zero bullet on hand. My local gun store (LGS) has a hard time keeping them in stock. Also, as for the Nosler bullet, MidwayUSA has a sale on them during Black Friday. Last year, they were $44 for a box of 250 count and if you spend $150, you get free shipping. So, I jumped on them and bought several boxes.
