Contrast 44 Mag & 45-70

Post by JEBar » Mon May 09, 2016 1:50 pm

below can be seen 44 Mag and 45-70 cartridges .... the 45-70 is considerably longer and a tiny bit wider .... with a 300 grain bullet the max recommended load for :

a 44 Mag is 15.0 grains of AA#7 which generates 1387 fps

a 45-70 is 58.0 grains of AA2015 which generates 2128 fps

no common powders are shown for these calibers so for this illustration I picked 2 powders made by the same company .... as can be seen, the difference is considerable

Nosler does recommend 2400 for 44 Mag but not for 45-70

over the years we've found W296 to work well for our hunting loads

45/70 405 gr bullets on left, 44 mag cartridge, 45 ACP cartridge, 45/70 300 gr bullets

The 405 gr 45/70 bullet is about the same size as a 45 acp round. :D
