Looking for help! Own a Henry BBS .44 mag. first load hornady 240 gr JHP. IMR 4227 Starline brass and Win primers. Shot great 1.5" 5 shot groups at 50 yds. ( 1.650 fps) So I bought some Montana gold JSP( looking for a solid, penetrating bullet for a hunting load). They produced a 4" vertical string and lost 100 fps? Only change was the bullet. I now have 495 of them left! Anyone familiar with these bullets , with any success?? I had read great things about them. Any "pet" loads or variations to try give me a shout!

with that many on hand, I'd recommend loading 5 to 10 round groups of various powder charges to see if there is a combination that will tighten up the groups ....

The most accurate loads so far in my Henry .44 mag rifle is Hornady 240 gr XTP JHP bullets over 19.6 grains of Alliant 2400 or 22.0 grains of IMR4227. I have tried other bullets and other loads but none compare to what I listed. Soon I will be trying the Hornady's over Accurate #9 powder because I have not been able to get anymore Alliant 2400. The factory Hornady 240 grain XTP JHP also shoot well from my rifle and are slightly hotter than my reloads.

Thanks guys. I live in a powder limited area. ( Cuomo controlled) I intend to go on a quest 50 mi+ or more for H110 and Alliant 2400. Both seem to be recommended highly in the .44mag. I wanted a solid, penetrating bullet for the next falls dear season. And went into a panic when they grouped so poorly! Since I have 495 of them...lol. I hope the bullet diameter isn't a contributing factor. I will keep you posted when I get some positive results.

Hey got my hands on a couple lb. of H110. Good news only $27 per lb. Bad news I drove 130 mi. to get it!..lol. Loaded some test loads, range tomorrow. Results to follow.

we've had good luck with H110/W296 .... looking forward to hearing your results

Got to the range at camp this morning...had to run off 2 nice tom turkeys! 5/1 season opens. Sunshine and a balmy 36f with a slight Canadian breeze..lol I had loaded a stiff H110 load with the Montana Bullets (1,700fps ave. ) and they shot a respectable 1.3" at 50 yds. But hands down the Hornady JHP and 4227 (1,600 fps ave.) 8 fps deviation! and .60" 3 shot group is the load to beat. I have not tried the Hornady H110 combination yet. Since I still have 490 Montana Gold bullets I will try a few load variations of them, backing it off a bit. Once I find a hunting load I will load down for just shooting. There were no signs of pressure but you could feel the difference when you fired the 1,700 fps loads.
