I'm still trying to find a useable load for the 45/70 and came across the Barnes "original" 300 grain flat nose.I'm not crazy about the idea of using a HP on deer so this bullet caught my attention. Has anyone used this bullet on game and is it suitable for125-150 lb deer? Thanks,

for 300 gr hunting bullets we use Nosler's Ballistic Silvertips .... https://www.nosler.com/45-70-govt-strong-actions-only

I have no direct experience with Barnes 300 gr bullets but based on using their 400 grain'ers, I tend to believe they would be excellent bullets

Most of the Barnes bullets are solid copper. Built as hunting bullets from the ground up.

I don't hunt these days but they have a good rep. Spendy buggers.

I can't see the Barnes 300gr bullet from a 45/70 being or having much different ballistics from the Barnes 300gr TMZ. fired with a 100-150gr charge.
Velocities are in and around the same.

That bullet was designed with deer and similar critters in mind, impacting at typical 45-70 velocities of 1,500 to 1,800 fps.

So it will be great!

Thanks Tim, it doesn't recoil all that bad and it seems to be grouping well with IMR 4198. I'm getting more copper fouling then I care for but that's what solvent us for
Semper Fi!

What weight of IMR 4198 are you using? Around 40 to 42 grains?

for hunting level ammo we are pushing our 300 gr Noslers with 51.5 gr of IMR 4198

Wow, that's a smoking load.

I never went that high except in a Ruger No. 1!

that is the max load for "Strong Action" rifles like the Marlin Model 1895 as shown in Nosler's #7 Manual .... Henry builds their rifles to that standard .... in the last year, we've run well over a hundred through our Henry CCH 45-70 and they perform well

Awhile back I sent an inquiry to Henry and was told our rifles could handle any load considered safe in the modern Marlins. Barnes tech data page shows a starting load of 49.5 gr IMR 4198 at about 2254 fps and a max load of 53.5 gr of the same powder at about 2428 fps. I'm using 47.0 and my Chrony shows 2050 6 ft from the muzzle.

that's pretty close to what Nosler recommends .... we've found their 300 gr bullets do really well in our Henry .... I tend to believe the same would be true for bullets made by Barnes

I am jealous that you have a stash of the 300gr Nosler!

I have Hornady and Remington 300gr HP and the Nosler BT 300gr (and some 350gr Hornady). I would not want to push my soft 300gr that fast. I fear they would "bomb" on a deer!

a while back I got lucky and came across a sale on Nosler 300 gr 45-70 bullets ===> http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.p ... nds#p46014 <=== that is the second time I've done so and I do try to stock up .... I haven't downed any deer with them and am looking forward to doing so .... I have seen plenty of high speed 30 caliber bullets take deer with a rather violent impace
