Who is using 2400 for 44 mag and 45/70? How is accuracy. I'm looking for a midrange powder to fill the gap between the real light cowboy stuff and hot loads like H110 and 5744.

can't help with 2400, I've never used it .... for our 44 mag hunting loads we use H110 or W296 ... for our lower power, lead practice loads we use Bullseye

I use 2400 for .44 magnum reloads when I want close to factory specs. If it was good enough for the father of the cartridge, E.K., it will work for me.

I always used it for .357 magnum loads and .44 magnum loads. I have never used it for my .45-70 loads. I use 14.5 grains of 2400 in my .357 magnum loads and 19.6 grains of 2400 in my .44 magnum loads. My problem is finding 2400 powder. I have not been able to buy any around here for 2 years and have now run out of it.
I have been experimenting with Accurate Arms #9. Trying to find loads that have same POI at 50 yds. as the 2400 laods. I am finding this powder to be as accurate as 2400. My groups actually seem a little tighter with it. I am currently very close POI wise using 14.2 grains of AA#9 with my .357 magnum loads and 20.0 grains of AA#9 with my .44 magnum loads.
H4198 is the only powder I have used in the .45-70. I am very pleased with it and I don't use full house loads. I am happy using max load trap door loads.

Like Steve I use 2400 for .357 with the same load 14.5 gn's. My lever gun loves it. I had to look long and hard to find 2400 and finally found a supply at a local gun store.

Bass Pro shops had 2400 on the shelf the other day.

Wife & I took a four day outing to Indiana and Kentucky last week. I stopped at several gun shops in both states and two shops had Alliant 2400 for sale on their shelves, so I have now restocked my supply of 2400.

Hi Guys, what bullet are you using with the 2400? Is it possible to use 2400 in .357 with a cast bullet or is it best to use jacketed?

I think there are several members here that shoot cast bullets in their Big Boy's but I don't know if they use 2400 powder.

For me, I stay with Hornady 158 grain XTP JHP bullets with 2400 in the .357 and use Hornady 240 grain XTP JHP bullets with 2400 in the .44 magnum.

Plenty of loads for.357 mag with 2400 and cast bullets.
Lyman cast bullet handbook is the place to start.

I use 158gn Zero JHP's. Love those Zero's.

Me, too. I've been shooting them for a few years and I'm glad they're back in production and available again.

It only gets better. I picked up an 8 pound jug of Alliant 2400 Saturday. Guess what I'm doing today.

I use 17.9 grs. & 240 gr XTP in my Big Boy 44 mag
One ragged hole at 50 yds.

2400 is top notch 44 and 357 powder

E.K. The guy that was responsible for the .44 magnum used 2400 for his loads in that and the .357 and .41 mag.

Both Elmer and Skeeter Skelton were fans of 2400. I'll probably pick u a pound at the next gun show I go to.

O.K. a 2400 question from a newb hand loader.
I have a couple pounds of Alliant 2400 that I have yet to try.
While at a gun show recently, I picked up a pound of Hercules 2400.
The can was unopened, and from a trusted source. He assured me that it was viable powder, having been properly stored.

I see older load books, and some new ones, that show loads for Hercules 2400.
Other manuals/online sources list Alliant loads, but I've yet to see the two listed together in the same manual.

I know Alliant bought out Hercules some time back, but has the formula changed significantly over time?
My biggest question is,
Can I use Alliant data with Hercules powder, and Hercules data with Alliant powder, or is this a bad idea?

I'd call Alliant.

I'd call Sierra bullets at 1-800-223-8799 and ask for ballistics. I bet they have your answer. I have used that number many times It's their reloading question hotline. They have always treated me very well and have never steered me wrong.
