38/357 & 45 Lead

Post by JEBar » Tue May 23, 2017 12:08 am

I'm looking for a manufacture and source for some 180 gr 38/357 (as used by Buffalo Bore) and/or 430 gr 45 lead bullets (as used by HSM) .... I think it would be interesting to try and build heavy hunting loads using them

Not sure why you think you "need" a 430gr 458 bullet (especially for a lever gun) for hunting... its overkill for anything south of Alaska....suggest you seek/find something in the 325-350gr area...the quarry will never know the difference, but your shoulder certainly will... BobG in VA

welcome to our community, happy to have you join us .... you have posted a valid question ... in the first post in this thread I mentioned "hunting level loads" which I fear may have caused some confusion .... as much as I'd like to, I'll never see Africa much less an elephant in my cross hairs .... my interest in larger bullets doesn't stem from what I foresee needing for hunting .... I already have literally hundreds of loaded 300 - 405 grain'ers and thousands of jacketed and lead bullets waiting patiently to be run through our presses .... reloading them involves no mystery, we've gone through the process and settled on the individual loads that work best for us .... as we have done with our other favorite calibers (300 WBY, 30-06, 308, 30-30) I want to expand our range of available ammo .... not from the stand point of fulfilling a need but from a desire to try new things and to learn .... I'm now ready to apply that same spirit of experimentation to our 357 Mag, 44 Mag, and 45-70 calibers .... I don't see any value in working up new Cowboy Action (for lack of a better term) level loads with larger bullets that I use to punch paper .... I'm interested in developing new hunting level loads with the heaviest possible bullets just to see how doing so could maximize the capabilities of each firearm

as noted, we are glad you have joined .... if you own any Henry firearms, please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add them to our community total

If cast for both, then I don't think you can beat Beartooth Bullets. http://beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/index.htm I have not used them myself, but everyone who has and reported about them found them to be the highest quality.

If you are looking at jacketed for .357, then Swift A-Frames. They also make some great .44 and .45 rifle bullets that open at low velocity, but still retain great weight at high velocity. I may have to try their 240 gr .44 bullet with some H110 in my Big Boy. I have about 1 1/3 pounds that has been sitting around a long time waiting for the right use!

suggestions appreciated .... I've heard of Bear Tooth bullets but have never tried them .... the same is true for Swift A-Frames .... we have used W296 in our 44 mags since the 60's .... when we can't find it, H110 works well (actually can't tell any difference) .... when it comes to 240 gr jacketed 44 hunting level bullets, the only ones we load are Nosler's JHP's .... they have a long history of doing a very good job for us .... what I'd like to find are some well made, heavier than usual Jacketed bullets .... the main reason is simply to have something new to develop a load for .... we really don't need anything heavier than a Nosler 240, I've never seen a boar, bear or deer that was able to fight one off .. ;)

Jim
If Im not mistaken Cast Performance does the bullets for Buffalo Bore. Beartooth are good bullets but be prepared to wait a while for them they take there time in getting them to you. Al
