Feeding the Henry 45-70

Over the winter I made 1500 350gr 5% antimony HC bullets. This past weekend on Saturday I decided to load a few rounds. On Sunday loaded some Hornady 325GR FTX.

Sounds good. I'm a 444 man myself.
I cast a 325+gr. for it. Some over some 2400 for some casual plinking, and some over some H4198 for a more serious note.

Someone at a local range shoot around September each year with 444 marlin rounds. Last year I collected several hundred rounds, decamped them and cleaned them. I ended up using them for barter as apparently finding cases is like hen's teeth. I shot a 444 many years ago and it is a great round and in Maryland it can be used in every county where shot guns are used along with areas in rifle country in Maryland.

Handloader... do you know of a source for 405-430 gr cast bullets with a large flat nose like the hammer heads? Think Beartooth used to make something like that but they are out of business. I see and use bullets like that for 45 Colt and 44 Magnum but can't find them for 45-70 which is strange. Heavy WFN bullets at 1000-1300 FPS is what I like. IMR 3031 works well for me powder wise.

Oregon Trail sill offers 405 gr. LCRN bullets with a a broad flat surface. However, they do not carry a gas check. I apply a gas check, and with a scope, consistently shoot 2"-3" groups at 100 yds.

I use 35 grains of IMR 4198. That should be good enough to get a one-shot kill on a Maine bull moose. All I have to do is win a moose license in the Maine Lottery and come up with $3,500 - $5,000 in unneeded cash to fund-up a guided 3 day moose hunt up there.

I'm just getting started reloading 45-70. Just curious as to what mold you use and is it gas checked?.

Can’t help you on the mold but back when I loaded 45/70 I discovered that the standard MTM loading blocks are too small for the rim diameter of the cartridge. RCBS does make a block specifically for the 45/70.

I'm fairly new to the 45-70. I have a H015-4570 Single Shot. So far, I have loaded up some 250 grain Hornady MonoFlex loads for light hunting, (53.5 Vihtavouri N120 - max load - 2533 f/s velocity), some Berry's 350 grain RS for plinking (44.0 IMR 4198 at 1788 f/s velocity), and some Mouse Farts (25.0 grains IMR 4198 at 1200 f/s for the kids). Both regular loads (not the Mouse Farts) are just over an inch at 100 yards (with a scope), so I'm happy with them. What I'm looking for now is a load using a 400 or 405-grain jacketed bullet for a full-blown 45-70 "experience". My hunting club is going on a campout in March and I want to load up some heavy hunting loads for some gong shooting and maybe elk at a later date. I've been trying to get some Speer 400 grain SPFN's, but none are available right now. Any suggestions? Thanks
