IMR4227 and the 357mag
IMR4227 and the 357mag
What about IMR4227 for the 357? I jnow its an older powder and there is lots of data out there for it but I rarely see many posting loads for it in that caliber. Too slow?
Being that it is slower Im using it, to good effect, with 165gr SWCGC's from Matts Bullets and was lucky enough to find a dual use load for both my lever gun and at least two revolvers. Its a pretty stout charge but easily manageable in both an L frame and more so in an N frame.
Anyone here load with 4227? How were the results?

Ive used it in 45 colt but not 357. Hard to get by using 2400 in 357 at my loading bench.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Re: IMR4227 and the 357mag
Ive only been at the reloading bench for about 7-8 years now and have never tried 2400 but if I could catch some 1lb cans for sale Id certainly buy some. Its always the 8lb jugs.
The 4227 seemed to work pretty good, I mean Ive found alot of data for it, published data. Slow powder, heavy bullet, long barrel seems to be a winner.

Re: IMR4227 and the 357mag
I use 4227 quite a bit in both 45 colt and 357 mag. I don't load heavy as i use the 357 in some older 357 revolvers, but it does quite well out of the revolver and henry.

Re: IMR4227 and the 357mag
Do you ever load up to max with it in the 357? My rossi bulges the brass pretty bad when loading near max with alot of powders but not so with 4227 and the LilGun. Jist curious if others see lower pressure signs when using it.

I use 4227. It's great for reduced loads where you want control instead of a barrel burner.

Re: IMR4227 and the 357mag
I have used 4227 in .357 magnum and .44 magnum. Loads were very accurate. Seems to foul my barrels more than 2400, AA#9, or H110. Of these 4 powders I mentioned, I use 4227 the least.
