Loading 45-70 and a new load of mine.

Post by fortyshooter » Mon Jul 10, 2023 7:18 pm

Been loading up one of my favorite "mild" 45-70 loads using the standard 405 gr. RN cast bullet and 13 gr. Unique. Looking at that bullet I was thinking why not a full wadcutter design with a slight chamfer on the edge to help with chambering. Looked around and found I had a few 500 gr RN rounds that were loaded with 40 gr. of IMR 3031 and that light went on again. I took one of them to the shop and cut it back in the lathe to give a nice full flat that ends up at a 2.520 COL which is standard and will cycle in my 1895 Marlin even with the full wadcutter profile. Bullet weight is around 390 gr. as an estimate judging from before and after weight. That bullet shape will give a good full impact on what it hits at some sacrifice in long range accuracy.
Haven't found any as cast bullets like that currently available but will look around before I order up more of the 500 gr. RN bullets to cut back to use for loading.

I wonder if a mould could be modified to get that result. Since I have A great amount of pure lead and linotype metal , casting some of those full wadcutters for my Rolling Block 45-70 is an interesting idea.
