Redding Profile Crimp Die

Post by 5shot » Sun Mar 05, 2023 10:45 pm

My new Big Boy Steel in .45 Colt was shooting fairly well with Unique loads and 2400 loads with 250 XTP's that were roll crimped with an RCBS die. The primer was Win LP. Crimping (medium roll crimp) was done in a separate operation from seating but it seemed like every 5 shot group would toss a flyer or two.

The cardinal sin of load developing is to change more than one thing at a time but on a whim I changed everything but the bullet and brass. LGS had some Accurate #5 which is a powder I've never tried before so I picked up a couple pounds of that. The 250 XTP's were loaded over 11.4 grains of #5 with CCI 300 primers and crimped with the Redding profile crimp. Disregarding the black spots, that gray cluster at the bottom of the fifty yard plate is ten shots with the above load while standing and using a hastily fashioned rest. No flyers there but now I need to backtrack and isolate the cause of the early issue. I didn't take the chrono but would guess around 1250 or so. Also tried five shots with the XTP over 296 and WLP's crimped again with the profile crimp and no picture but 5 shots under an inch. The 296 charge was from the Lyman 51st manual and was the starting charge for Rugers and Contenders with pressure well below the Henry's limit.

So...a couple of takeaways here. I was impressed with Accurate #5 and Win 296 and I like the Redding profile crimp. It doesn't flex the case mouth as much as a roll crimp so it would seem that claims of extended case life might be valid. Now back to the loading room. Next trip to the range I'll take the chronograph and some decent sandbags.

Edit to add....Rifle has a 1 3/4 to 5 scope that was set on 4X.

Nice shooting. I have several Redding proflie crimp dies and like them alot. I dont single stage much ammo I use my Dillon Square deal. It has the same kind of die.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

This is my first profile crimp die but plan to get a couple more....a .357 and .44 and maybe .41. Not sure whether the lack of flyers is from changing components or the crimp die or a combination of both. I also wonder if the Winchester STD or MAG primer which is capable of lighting heavy charges of slow burning powder is more spark than needed for light loads of faster powders? Another range session with the chronograph will answer a few questions.

In any case, this rifle has made me more of a fan than ever of the .45 Colt cartridge. It makes a perfect companion to my Ruger 5 1/2" Bisley. :)

I would consult the manual again on the 296. Most cases 296 requires a mag primer. Also AA #5 is real close to the same as Unique

Nice shooting and great 50 yd group. If it were me, I'd stick with the load you have there and not give a hoot about your past flyers. Why waste good bullets, powder and primers trying to recreate a problem load. But, that's just the way I see it.

Al. The Winchester Large Pistol primer is a one size fits all. It's recommended for both standard and magnum loads. That's why I was wondering if Winchester says it's capable of lighting heavy charges of slow powder (and it is) maybe it's more spark than necessary for lighter charges of easy to ignite powder?

In any case....I think Headhog mighta nailed it. :D

I believe I'd follow Paul's thinking and stay with AA#5, XTP's and the CCI 300 primers. That sure seems like a very good load. Will you be sticking with jacketed bullets or try any cast bullets? #5, 2400, Red Dot or Unique work well there. Anyways, good shooting.

Agree with Paul also. If it is working why change it. Correct on the Winchester primers. According to what I read mag primers are not any hotter they just burn longer.

Rifletom. I tried a couple cast bullets with this rifle and the results have been just fair so far. I've been a handloader and bullet caster for many years but when it comes to levergun knowledge.....a rookie. I cast for .45 Colt and .454 revolvers and have several bullet molds, among them the Lyman #452424 255 gr. SWC, the RCBS 270 SAA SWC and RCBS 300 gr. SWC GC. Good molds and nice bullets... BUT...too long to cycle through the H012. The Lee 200 and 255 RF's cycle fine as does the Lee 300 gr. gas check. For deer hunting in the deep woods I'm sure the Lee 300 gr. would hit like a truck without having to lean too hard on velocity. The next project is to get reasonable accuracy at 50 yards with the 200 and 255 Lee's on the plate rack. I've got Red Dot, Unique, AA5 and BE86 which should all work for light plinkers.

If you have any HS-6 or know of any around it will also work for the 45 Colt with those bigger bullets
