H4198 is a great powder choice for the 45/70 in my opinion. I used the Hornady 300gr. H.PT. for a while on deer. It was claimed to be for light skinned game. The first deer I shot came off a drive and they were in high gear when they came by me. There was a nice 6pt in the group. I had my 1895 Marlin with peep sights and the first shot hit a tree and I saw a slab of wood the size of a piece of fire wood fly through the air. The buck then broke away from the others and going away from me I hit it a few ribs ahead of the rear ham. It went right down and after skinning it out there was a hole bigger than my open hand going in and the opposite rib cage was full of shrapnel holes. It acted more like a pistol bullet than a rifle bullet. Only recovered pieces of jacket material. Other times it was about the same result. I had a stout load of H4895 in it that made your head hurt after several shots from a bench. One of my friends shot it and said it wasn't going to hurt him. He was brave until it knocked one of his teeth loose. Most my friends only fired it once and handed it back and said "You can have that beast." It had a straight grip stock that made it harder to hold on to. If I still had mine I would go to the 350gr. Hornady for deer. My 444 Marlin is much easier to control the recoil than the 45/70 but that doesn't mean I don't like the 45/70.

Whew....smoking loads! Which 45-70 rifle were you shooting? My former lever action was a Marlin, 1990's version and I am new to the Henry's and I am looking for someone who knows how heavy a load the Henry will handle? Brass or steel framed? My guess would be the steel version. Thanks for the data. IMR3031 is also a great 45-70 powder! Nice sweet smell.

I've tried RL-7, 8208 and 3031 with the 300JHP. H4198 got them moving the fastest. There was no primer cratering or any other signs of pressure.

I'm not familiar with H4198 but have used buckets full of IMR4198 .... any Correlation ?

Ive been usin Reloader 7 and like it well enough that I havent tried 4198. I did have a 444 though at one time I used it in with good results. But I have been using the Hornady 350 gr bullet in the 45-70. Al

well done .... 58.5 gr H4198 is truly a powerful combo .... just checked our Nosler Manual and 51.5 grains of IMR 4198 is the Max load .... they list a muzzle velocity of 2228 fps
