henry 30 30win poor grouping

Post by larry7293 » Fri Sep 23, 2022 6:18 pm

I am having trouble getting any kind of accuracy using IMR4227{16.5gr} and 165grn boolits sized at .309 from MBC no gas check in my Henry 30 30 steel. Wondering what size boolits and powder people are using? Lucky if I can hit a 3 inch target at 25yards.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger on that one. I couldn't get them to group well either. I think they need to be .310"-311" to work.No gas check here either. I have twenty left loaded up, when they're gone, thats it. Thats one MBC that just doesn't seem to work as is. All other MB's work well.
Or, T & B bullets from Oregon.

No Henry 30-30, but I do own 5 30-30's, I shoot 170-174 gr cast sized at .310.
Around 9.4, 9.5 grs. of Unique shoots really well in on Winchester and a couple of the Marlins.
But to really know what any particular will shoot well, you need to slug the barrel to know for sure.
Both targets were 50 yds. Tha cardboard target was down in Fla in 2018, the other was last Fall here at home.

This is the last group I shot off a bench with my brass Henry 30-30. Lee 170 fp, gas checked and tumble lubed with liquid alox. Sized .309 over 26 gr. 748. 200 yards. The whole group fit under my fist, and the 3 shot cluster is about the size of a quarter.

I haven't shot any of the 165grn Mo. Bullets out of a Henry but have had good results with both the 135grn and 165 grn Hi Tecks out of my Uberti 94. With the 135 grn bullets I use 6.5 grns of Green Dot. It is a real light load with zero recoil and about one inch groups at 50yds. With the 165grn bullets I use 26grns of W748 That gives me slightly larger groups. I have been getting the best results with Beery's 150 plated. Are they leading your bore.

I use Hornady 150gr RN (#3035) with 36gr Leverevolution. Shooting from a rest, can hit consistently a 4in paddle at 75yds.

I found 12 grns of IMR4227 with the 309 boolit gives me the best accuracy.
