45-70 loads

Post by wingnut » Wed Jun 15, 2022 6:29 pm

Seems to be a paucity of 45-70 loadings here abouts.

I've been playing with the Acme cast & coated .458 LFP 405 grain at 2.540" COAL & 3/4 crimp with a LFC die. I have yet to get any accuracy with 28-29 grains of BluDot. What are your favorite loadings, both cast and jacketed?

3031 or 4198 for smokeless loads, and five grains of 4198 against the primer and 60 grains of Dupont FFg with a bullet lube of fifty fifty bees wax and Crisco and a 400 grain cast from a Lyman mould.

Rifle - Marlin model 1895C with 26"barrel, Starline brass, gas checked 405 Grain Oregon Trail Lazer Cast bullet atop 35 grs of IMR 4198.
I bought the rifle new 2016, and for the first 2 years accuracy was not good, i.e., 5 - 6" groups at 100 yards. I broke down and had a Leupold VX2 4-12x scope mounted on the rifle and my 100-yard groups tightened up to 2" - 3". I have not chronyed this load but it is probably around 1,500 FPS. I add an additional step to the reloading process; after crimping with a Lee FCD, I polish the bullets with a very fine steel wood pad. This smooths out nicks and any other imperfection on the bullet which might affect its spin and trajectory.
