You might see that with lighter, slimmer bullets but I have doubts you will see that with a 250gr+ 45 bullet. Those bullets tend to be much more stable crossing the transonic barrier. 9mm and under, I try to stay away from breaking the barrier unless I am over 1250fps. Anything bigger than that, I don't worry about it. 22 vs 45 Its kind of the difference between throwing an arrow vs throwing a rock. One is far more susceptible to air disturbance than the other.

Well, the last two range trips have been successful. As soon as I focused on bringing the speeds up passed 1000 fps, and closer to the 1050-1100, my groups shrank.

I appreciate the tip, I've had significant improvement over the last couple of sessions. I'll upload the photos here.

I have a 44 magnum Rossi R92 that I’m having accuracy issues with. Going to try a different weight bullet and see how it does. The 1600 fps 240’s aren’t grouping good. I have some 200gr JHPs at a screaming 2,000 fps. We’ll see how those do. Those are my “Liberty” loads, 1776 ft lbs of muzzle energy.

Ive 200 rounds of 38 spl loaded. Everything from 125 jhp to 180grn jhp. I loaded 10 rounds a piece for some, and 25 for others.

I'll shoot some 10. Shot strings to see if i like the groups and go from there.

The 45colt, i loaded 225ish rounds in 10 round groups. They range from 240grn hbwc to 315 rffp gc. Ive a number of jacketed bullets, and i hope i get them close to that 1050 fps mark.

We shall see, i'm busy today and tomorrow, but i should have time monday or tuesday to doo some shootin.

The wood stock/forend set up is Awesome 👏. I want to do that with my HenryX 45c. I’ve started testing subsonic loads. The powders I’m trying is Unique, HP-38, Tightgroup. 255gr LSWC.. Best group was 2” @ 50yds with Tightgroup but I could hear a crack when fired. I tried slower powders like Blue Dot & 2400 but to no avail. I have another batch to try this week. I’d like to try 300 gr.

I had the big boy x's out today. I broke one of the foreend cap screws on my bigboy x 45 colt. I emailed henry, but does anyone know place to get suitable replacements? Henry does not have them listed on their website.

All the groups were on my shooting bench, and at 70 yds.

Hornaday's 250 flex tip 7.8 grns of clean shot average of 1035 fps

Image

Bottom row on this target, (upper left are different round) Matt's 280grn lswc 7.4 grns cleanshot average is 1022fps
Image

Cast performance 300rn GC 7.4grns clean shot 1008fps
Image

Matt's 240grn HBWC (fed one at a time) 7.0 grns clean shot 1090 fps

The 5 on the paper Cast performance 265grn FP 7.4grns clean shot

Big boy x 357.
Matts 165 lswc .358 13grn 4227 1282fps average

Matts 155 lswc 11.4grns 4227 average is 1095 fps
Image

Sierra 158JHP 15grns 4227 average 1435fps

extreme 158 swc plated 15grns 4227 avg 1450fps ( note, I had two similar loads of these plated. hence why all the extra holes. the second load (not shown) was with comparable speed cleanshot, that load groups 10inches.)

I hadn't received a response from henry's email warranty system. I called them today. They are currently out of the front-end caps for the BIG BOY X wood conversion kits. It's upward of a week or two to get a new front end cap.

So I did my best to find a replacement.

Here's what the screws looked like. No, I didn't over torque them. They were simply snapped off during recoil. I was shooting mostly subs, so, why they both heads broke off is a mystery. I lost the left screw somewhere in the yard.
Image

Luckily, I buy parts, lots of parts, and screw kits are worth their weight in gold.
Image

The screw is a size 6, 40 threads per inch. 6-40 3/8's inch long and Oval. I tried the square shoulder and the oval. The oval fits flush, and the square sticks out.

Finished product.

The new screw looks like it belongs there. Nice fit and color match.
