What is your favorite recipe for 357 Mag for the Henry rifle?
Powder, bullets, and primers?

I'd like to get back into re-loading after several years "if" I can gather the components. I have all the equipment (but no components.)
In the past I used 2400, 158gr lswc, and SPP for pistols. I ran a few hundred through the Henry and they were fine but I thought i'd see what you folks in the know are using.

Well you will get alot of 296 and H-110 suggestions but me the only horsepower I have had any luck with in a 357 is 2400. About 15 grains of it and 158gr xtp makes me smile for full blast loads. I use Unique HS-6 and Universal Clays for the target selection. I dont use mag primers either YMMV

Hey BI, I am with RT, my go to load for the Henry in .357 is 10.8 grains of 2400 pushing a 180 grain Missouri Bullet Striker Hi Tek round that chronos at 1428 fPS.

For pistol I have been using 6.7 grains of Bullseye to push 158 grain Hornady XTP JHP that chronos at 1100 fps. (shooting blackhawk, Python, S&W 686 or El Patron, all preform well)

11.5gr 2400/180gr rnfp coated from Missouri or T & B bullets are my standard in my Henry .357.
6.0gr Universal/158gr rnfp coated works very good also in rifle or revolver.

My 356 rifle is a 34" barreled Rossi, and my load is similar to Tom's. 11.4 under the 180 gr pugnose bullet from Missouri bullet co.

2400 is what I figured but I'm sure it'ill come down to I'll use what I can find, and at this point, I'm not going to be picky.

I load it myself... Now if I had hit the 8 instead of the 6, that would've really got your attention uh? Guess I should proof read better before I hit send, but in my defense, I was on the phone and without me glasses.

Cant tell you how many times I have had to re-edit a post the next day or day after! If I was a english major i wood do beter for shure !

For slow loads I like using CFE Pistol with 158 bullets. I like using 296 or for hotter loads. I want to experiment with 2400 but can not seem to find any.

Rifles- H110 and/or IMR 4227 for heavy, HP-38 and/or IMR 4227 for light to medium. All with 158 grain bullets.
Revolvers- HP-38 for wadcutters & other light loads. Still experimenting for something heavy out of the revolvers- H110 has too much flash/blast out of my 3" carry gun, & IMR 4227 underperforms & is very dirty out of short barrels.

If you are using 158 XTP, consider Lil'Gun instead of H110. For max load Hodgdon reloading shows something like 96% of the H110 velocity using Lil'Gun but with only 60% of the pressure. (Going from memory here - check it out on Hodgdon reloading site). If you are considering 180 XTP, then the pressures become more similar.
For handgun & lead I use Clays (NOT Clays Universal). If I recall 3.1 grains under 158. Again, check the Hodgdon reloading site.

Alliant 2400 or Unique will work.

Like BigAl52 - 15 grains of 2400 under a Hornady XTP 158 grain using non magnum primers. Work wonderfully well in my single shot .357. Shoots great groups at 100 yards and has proven to be a very good whitetail rifle/round.

Lil-gun and forcing cones are not user friendly. Freedom Arms recommends not using that powder in there pistols it burns hot hot

Accurate #9 works great too.

Interesting article. But right now experimentation with powders isnt real available. Limited supplies of powder for sale make that a little tough. I do have some Lilgun at home and have used it in rifles but 357 and 41 mag it would be real hard to get me to switch from 2400. YMMV
