Ok . My new unit says 10 feet away. Now I don't have a regular rifle rest to sight from. I use only a sand bag front to rest the rifle. Now I only have two lever guns. A 44 mag and a 357. I have no idea how much muzzle blast they would have. I mean nothing like a large rifle I'm sure. I wouldn't think any more than a hand gun..So I'm wondering how far away the chronograph should be.. any ideas on this?? I've heard some say about 4 foot is all. Appreciate any advice or actual experience..johnny

I set up at 10' (.41mag). There's a small drop in MV in that 10', but nothing to worry about. I'll set up a target stand a foot or 2 beyond where the chrono will be so I have something to aim at, and fire a shot or 2 without the chrono. Don't want to kill the thing with a low, or off center, shot. Having a aim spot and a regular distance (whether it's 4' or 10' or whatever) also helps with getting consistent readings.

I called the company and she said 5 foot for pistol. Pro chronograph ltd model.. so if I'm shooting a 44 hand gun at 5 feet would I be able to do the same with my Henry in 44 mag. She didn't fully understand my question and said with a rifle,10//12 feet..??

Maybe, if you measure from the muzzle. Try it and see. There's no hard and fast rule for this, just experience. Whatever way you set up, do it the same way every time for that particular firearm & ammo so you don't introduce measurement error into your results.

I'm with Gunny, I set my chrono ten to 12 feet from the muzzle of the rifle and a target 10 feet beyond the Chrono. I keep the same distance for my pistols as well. Haven't shot the chrono yet !

I wouldnt think a guy would worry as much about shootin the Chrony in Arizona but I bet melt down could be a factor. Just sayin

That snake looks huge! The chrono might clock me at around 350 fps

He might be pretty fast to with that tail carrying the checked flag

With my old F1 Chrony I would shoot 10-12 ft away with a target behind the unit. Now with the Magna Speed it is just strapped to the barrel and I can shoot any target distance. Works great on the Henrys and some revolvers.

Agree with forty shooter, I also have an F1, it also works great EXCEPT with octagon barrels. I can use the F1 on my pistols and round barrel rifles, but all of my Henry's are octogon.

You say your F1 won't work with octagonal barrels? Barrel shape should not make a difference with the optical type chrono.

I was wondering about that also forty. I have the green F1 with seperate display. I've shot my BB brass .357 using my chrony and it worked fine. This is when I first got my Henry. There shouldn't be any problem. Hmm.

The problem with the Octagon barrel is the strap that secures the V3 to the barrel does not fit between the magazine and barrel due to the octogon shape (reduced gap).

If you try and strap it around the magazine you risk bending it, I have monkeyed with it, looked at others supposed solutions online and nothing works adequately for me to hold the V3 tight and in the correct position with the correct gap.

As you know the distance between the mag and bore is pretty narrow for theV3 to work properly. But also like I said, I really like the Pro Chrono DLX works extremely well, easy to set up and use.

I still use the V3 on other platforms, just not my Henry's cause of the octogon.

You are a machinist Forty, and I am sure you could skunk works a solution, I am a knuckle dragger with a public school education.

UPDATE: I may have confused the issue. I was referring to my Magneto V3 strap on Chorno that is problematic with the Octagon barrel, not the F1.

Hmmm. I have the basic Magna Speed Sporter and the strap slips right in between the mag tube on all my Henry lever rifles that have the octagonal barrel. Works really well and only thing I have to adjust is the Sensitivity level if the loads go much over 1500 FPS.

How thick is the strap on your unit?

I have a .065 gap between the mag tube and barrel on my .45 Colt carbine with oct. barrel. Now as I remember last time I used my .357 Henry to check speeds I used the old F1 before it broke. The gap on that one is .040 and strap is .050 so might have to lightly pry the mag tube down a touch in the middle and try and slide the unit up near end of barrel. I will try that and see if it works on the .357 Henry.
