40 S&W / 40 Special

Post by JEBar » Tue May 18, 2021 7:33 pm

while this will probably come as absolutely no surprise to some, for me it was NEW news .... I couldn't understand why Nosler would make and sell 40 S&W / 40 Special brass and not offer any 40 caliber bullets .. :?: .. as it turns out, they do but under a different name .... that being 10mm .... 10mm = 40 caliber .... Nosler offers a good range of 10mm bullets so it now makes sense

Yep, the 40 is a child of the 10mm. Originally the FBI wanted a more powerful ctg after the shootout in Florida many years ago so the 10mm was developed. It was too powerful for some of the agents so the 40 S&W was born. Basically it’s just a shortened 10mm with less velocity. Of course the 40 has it’s own issues with many as it’s a very high pressure ctg and has considerable muzzle blast. One fortunate outcome of all this is the 10mm. It’s a great caliber for four legged predators and many of us carry one for woods use. The caliber languished for years but recently has had a resurgence. Probably because Glock started building pistols for it and now many other companies are building it too including in the 1911 style.

Those FBI agents must of been wimps. The 10mm isnt that bad and I happen to like the 40. My PC carbine in 40 is alot of fun to shoot.

Actually Big Al, I think the bigger issue was the change in hiring, meaning shorter and smaller framed people were being hired from all sexes and they had issues with gripping with their small hands. I know LAPD had to adapt to a smaller single stack pistol in 40 S&W to accommodate as opposed to the .45acp

I considered keeping the 40 Special cases, buying another barrel for our Roughneck derringer and start loading them .... guess its a good thing Shooter's Pro Shop took them back :?

That’s a good point rng I have the Smith & Wesson 1006 10mm that is the full sized version of the more compact model 1076 the FBI carried. Both pistols have the same size grip just a shorter one on the 1076. And yes, it’s all my average sized hands can handle, pun intended. I did miss-speak above, the FBI just adopted the 10mm, it was not developed for them. The original 10mm (I believe) was the Bren 10.

I carried a Glock 23 for several years and took several training courses with it. Yes the 40 does have some bark but I bet I put around 1000 thru that Glock and it was perfect as expected. I decided to go smaller for OWB carry and replaced it with a Shield 9mm.

I remember those first Smiths with the big grips. Never thought about that. Good point RnG. Wish I had a couple of those now they bring some good money on GB. But with the newer guns that have come out 10mm just isnt that bad to shoot I dont think. Had one in a 1911 Rock Island Arms. I sold it but it was a good shooting gun.
