Been doing some horse trading, & find myself the proud owner of an 8lbs jug of IMR 4227.
Want to work up a load for use in my lever & single shot 357 Magnum rifles. Have always loaded with jacketed bullets, but think I want to go with coated lead for this one.
Leaning toward a 158 grain with rn or rnfp, but will certainly entertain your argument for heavier bullets or different profiles, so long as they'll feed in a lever action.
Lots of offerings out there in coated lead, so I'm hoping to learn from your experiences with some of them. Appreciate any recommendations or advice you have to offer.
Whether or not they're currently available is another matter, but don't expect anyone to check on that (I gotta do some of the legwork myself

Missouri Cast Bullets 180gr pugnose. Those are some great coated bullets. There not currently available but should become available toward the end of the month Im told. Those are the only cast coated I use other than that I like copper coated xtreme bullets. Also use jacketed from Roze Distribution. Sierra bullets has some on sale right now that might work also there a 170gr FMJ

I've not used IMR 4227, but, it is listed as a powder choice in the Lyman manual[#50], so, you're set. I and others here, use Missouri coated rnfp of 158 and 180gr bullets. I use 2400 and Universal powders in those. Others will chime in on what they use and do. That 4227 ought to work just fine.

Never used the 4227, but the last time I was at one of the shops they still had several lbs. of it.
Been using 2400 lately with those 180 gr Pugnose that Al, and Tom mentioned.
Used Blue dot before that, but getting accuracy with the 2400.

I am on board with RT and Big Al, they turned me onto Missouri Bullet 180 grain striker. It is by far my favorite load for the Henry. Can't get them now, but I was lucky to pick up 1K rounds before the SHTF. I have not loaded 4227, 2400 is my go to powder for the Henry 357.

I shoot the 158 grain in my pistols, ( although they feed fine in the rifle).

Another vote for the Missouri Bullets 180 Pug and the 158 gr. RNFP ! If you shoot steel make sure your attachments are in top shape with those 357 mag loaded 180's.

Have enough jacketed bullets to last for a bit, so think I'll wait a spell to see if those 180 pugs get back in the lineup.

Nosing around Google turned up nothing but great reviews on MBC 180 pugs- several comments like "most accurate load I've tried".
Now that's an endorsement.

One problem... my (limited) data sources don't include 180 grain lead among those tested with IMR 4227, only jacketed in 180 grains.
Any of you kind fellows have a data source?

Maybe someone with a Lyman manual will chime in. I have one but not at home right now. You probably wont find any for a 180 grain lead bullet. But I just did a little research and came up with some for a 160 grain bullet.

11.6 of 2400 is plenty to get the job done and that's what I use. 1380- 1400 FPS out of my Henry with 20 inch barrel and sweet shootin' !

Well there you go Randy to the rescue. Dont be surprised if you see some powder kernals in the barrel. 4227 will do that. Give it a good firm crimp
