Finally decided to do this, so I ordered a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph G2, from Midway. Did some research, not having ever owned or used one, and this is what I decided on.
It has Bluetooth to pair with my phone & app for display, if I choose. It also is mounted upside down from the usual format. Decided I like that better. Mounts on a flat surface or can use a tripod, which I already have.
I plan on working on my 45/70 loads next year, after deer season closes ( weather permitting ).
Should arrive sometime next week.
Also, liked the Competetion Electronic ProChrono DLX, but it pairs with iphone/pad, which I don't have.
We'll see how it goes, when the opportunity arises.
Also, decided I better order while it's available. Several of them are on backorder, like everything else shooting related.

Caldwell makes a good chrony at a reasonable price. I used an older model a couple years ago that paired with my note pad and pencil .

Btw, if you want more detailed stats than the chrony app provides, here's an excellent little on-line pgm that I use. You just have to enter the raw data manually:

congrats on the new chrony .... we use an earlier model Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph .... it has proven to be fine unit .... to determine the trajectory of our loads we feed the info into this link ===> http://www.jbmballistics.com/ballistics ... tors.shtml .

I had a F1 Chrony for quite a few years until it developed problems and when it was time to pick another one I went with the Magneto Speed.
So far very happy with it and I don't have to worry about the angle of the sun or whether it's going to shine at all.

I have the Magneto and the Competition Electronics ProChrono DLX Chronograph. Magneto is really nice, but has to be installed on each individual weapons platform.

I really like the Competition Electronics as I can set it up and shoot multiple weapons platforms without having to change anything. It is blue toothed so I can easily read the results on my android phone at the range, then download the data on the laptop when I get home. Great software with the digital link where you can add images of targets, notes, etc. It also syncs with your phone and lists the current weather conditions.

Chevys, Fords, Dodges, everyone has their preferences '67. I went to public school so I am not reeeeel smart, the Competition made it easy even for a cave man like me to operate !

Bottom line, no matter what you get, they are a blast to see exactly what you are shooting and help you tweak your loads.

LOL, I went to a small rural public school my self. Somehow, I survived.

I have the Competition but it’s too old to have the Bluetooth. That would be nice. I did buy a computer interface for it but was never able to figure out how to use it. The main problem I find with a chrono that is set up in front of your bench is if you shoot on a public range with line hot/cold conditions it takes a really long time to get it set up. To do it properly I need to make several adjustments to make sure I don’t shoot it. Waiting for other shooters to call for a cease fire to make adjustments takes a long time and when the line is cold I can’t check my scope for clearance. I’m really thinking I would like one of the units that fits onto the gun to make set up easier.

HDog, your points are very well taken. I forget about the public range. Here in AZ there is a box canyon on BLM land 12 minutes away that is a perfect range. Takes me 30 minutes to set up, but I am all alone and am very spoiled to that end. So I see your point on the Mangeto and not having to wait for a cease fire.

The version of the the the Competition you are talking about was plagued with complaints re; the software. To their credit they really cleaned it up.

Don't get me wrong, I also like the Magneto, it is a great, reliable Chrono and also user friendly. I have used both at the same time to see the results and they are surprisingly identical.

Have fun with it ! ! ! It sure has helped me with my loads.

I don't have a public range, but use a buddy's soybean field, and shoot into a small hill. Not high tech, but no waiting.

I really take it for granted sometimes being able to shoot as I do. I can set up a long range up to 200 yds flat, 500 yds on the hillside (If I am energetic enough to walk up hill), I have an area that is a perfect 270 combat range, combo paper and steel, and can tailor it to whatever platform I am shooting that day from pistol to long rife. AND I AM ALL ALONE ! ! ! !


Competition Chrono set up (by the way, I know folks have had problems with sunlight. Well it doesn't get any brighter than here in Az and I have never had a problem at any time of the day !)

Update, the Chrony arrived today, got it assembled, no issues, charged the battery ( took 2 hrs ). Did that while I went & got a hair cut. That don't take long either anymore, LOL. Then downloaded the Caldwell App, paired it with my Android phone. Went better than expected. Sometimes that can be a problem. Well pleased with the setup , etc. so far. The instructions were very good, went well.
So far, so good.Probably wont take it to the range for a while. Stay tuned, I'll post some results, when they happen.

Oh yeah r-n-g! I LOVE heading out to the desert to shoot. Where I go, NOBODY there. Just me or whoever I'm shooting with, usually a friend or two or lately my wife. No hassle, no wait, just shoot. Love it. A couple of us call ourselves the "MLC". Mojave Lever Crew. Boy, do we bring our levers. And single actions!

I know you love the desert Tom, I follow your shooting expeditions ! MLC, outstanding !

Runnin n gunnin is that open range land where anyone can setup and shoot? Very scenic place to shot! Was that Rattler dead BTW??

It is open range 40 shooter, its BLM land and open for public use. I was 4 wheelin in my jeep and stumbled on the canyon off the dirt road. It is accessible by 2wd if you are careful and have a bit of ground clearance. There is one spot where I have to cross a riverbed that has very soft sand. I only had to put the Chevy in 4wd once because I wasn't paying attention.

And yes, it is very scenic. When I go it is for the day, so I time out for lunch overlooking the valley.

Since I have been using it there is now a visible trail and now I do see signs of others who have used the same spot (old brass and SS shells) but I have never had to share the area or seen anyone for the past 2 years, so it remains very private.

We have a county range that has three pistol ranges and a long rifle range (only 100 yards) that is really nice, but it is 35 miles away, being 12 minutes from the compound and having complete control over my shooting, I prefer this.

As for Sam, he is my range pet. I throw him a mouse every time I set up to keep him happy !

(I'm nuts but not crazy, Sam was very,very dead thanks to the 45 cal CCI snake shot !)
