Tough times

Post by Grunt67 » Mon Nov 02, 2020 9:07 pm

Things must be getting rougher. I was prowling thru MidSouths reloading stuff, noticed they had finally sold that overpriced Hornady 45/70 brass. That's been there for as long as I can recall. Hadn't been more than a week ago I had looked. Coincidence?

You know when it's rough when you have to start making matchhead primers!

There’s a guy on our local buy/sell gun website that has a large bag of strike anywhere matches for sale. Now I understand why he listed them in the reloading section.

Im not sure when the primer shortage will ease up. But I know its going to be awhile. Ive seen this before and I have enough primers to get me through I think. But in the meantime Blackpowder shooting has taken presidence. I happen to like it alot anyway but BP caps are still avaliable.

I have a friend that gave up reloading about 6-7 years ago because 9mm was so cheap. Now he is scrounging to get ammo to compete with. His wife has not shot at the last two matches because they did not have enough ammo for both of them to shoot. One of the local USPSA clubs has had to cancel matches because regulars are not showing up.

This shortage is impacting everyone. Folks that don't reload are in the worse shape followed by those reloaders that don't have a sizable stock of primers and other components.

I should be good through next year, but if things do not get better by then, I'll be hurting also.

Im sure there are some that trickle in to local sporting goods stores. I have 2 15 miles away from me. But Im not one to frequent those stores to buy 1 or 2 hundred primers. Maybe some local gun shops get them but we dont have any local gun shops here.

I was in our small town only variety store (Bi-Mart) the other day and they had two different 9mm ammo types available. CCI Blazer Brass for $11.99 and Remington for $13.99. Both FMJ 50 pack boxes. Didn’t buy any as I’m good on 9mm but it’s out there.

Definitely scarce. You have to be persistent & lucky. When in need I check the online stores daily. That's how I found 2, 50pc bags of
45/70 Starline brass a few weeks ago I had checked for weeks, finally, paydirt. I don't expect things to improve, at all.

I went to my usual LGS this morning, and he's having a tough time getting bullets, cases and especially primers of any kind. Said it isn't going to be getting any better anytime soon. Powder he has. One of the guys i go out to the desert with recently bought a Henry LR in .308. Can't find primers anywhere. We got to talking, and I had plenty of LRP's and he has plenty of LPP's. We met up and traded 1K to each other! I am now really set.
I know what some of you are going thru, but, a little bartering can work. Well, time for a stiff Bloody Mary.

Great deal !

I'm OK for a while having plenty loaded up but hopefully by summer of 2021 maybe ammo loading supplies to be found.

We have a gun show in the next town over ( 15 mi. ), tomorrow & Sun. I'll check it out. Curious to see any difference in prices & supply. I don't need anything, just like to look & fondle the mdse.

Everytime I go to gun shows during a shortage like this I see tables with alot of way overpriced items. One reason I quit going. I saw this alot when 22LR was hard to find.

You're right about the prices. I usually don't go to buy, just see what I can see, fondle the mdse, move on. If I am going intent on buying a particular gun, I know what it is supposed to sell for, if it's unreasonable, leave it laying there.
The Henry I bought, came from a LGS, couldn't find it at a gun show anyway.

I found some small rifle mag primers today at a local big sporting goods store. Limit was 200 so the wife chipped in and I got 400. Also found plenty of #11 caps and some 50 caliber balls. Not much for ammo though.
