the only long gun I will load with black powder is our Thompson Center Hawken .... no way I'll use it in any of our Henry rifles .... as best I can tell I plan to load and keep 4 levels of 45-70 on hand .... since almost all of our shooting will be paper punching .... for that I plan to find a build a load using the cheapest lead bullet that works well in our Henry out to 100 +/- yards .... I don't care the weight, the cheapest that works the best is my criteria for paper punching and I plan to keep hundreds on hand .... the second will be a round for hunting Deer, Boar, and/or Black Bear at ranges less than 200 yards .... the bullet for that load will be Nosler's 300 gr BST .... I can't envision the need to keep 50 or so on hand .... the third would be a stronger hunting load built around a 405 grain lead bullet .... here again 50 or so on hand .... the 4th group would be built around a 500 or larger grain bullet (if I could find one) .... basically I will do this and keep 50 or so on hand just to have them .... I wish that down the line I would be able to hunt game that would require such ammo but I have no illusions that will ever happen
I recently ordered some 200 gr RNFP from Penn Bullets for my Big Boy. They may be a good source for a cheap lead bullet for the .45-70. They have a 300gr RNFP with a single lube groove that is priced reasonably (I think based on what I have looked at for .45-70) at 500 for $96. http://www.pennbullets.com/4570/4570-caliber.html They will also size them at .457, .458, or .459. I ordered from them as I have been looking for a 44 mag bullet sized at .432 and couldn't find anything that wasn't as expensive or more than jacketed. I measured my barrel's groove diameter at .431 with a fishing weight. A rep at Henry also confirmed that is their standard. So, .432 sized cast bullets should work well. I got mediocre to extremely poor accuracy with medium to fairly high velocity and a .431 bullet.

tx gunrunner,

Is that a Ruger no. 3 action you used for your 32-40? Beautiful guns you have built.

Have you ever dealt with Uberti High Wall reproductions? If so, what did you think of them?

Yes that is a Ruger no.3 with a Douglas barrel , my trigger I designed and made , plus I cut the lock time down for offhand shooting . I won many matches with that gun .

No .... I have never seen Uberti's High Wall ..............Uberti and Pedersoli make the best reproductions gun in the world in modern and better steel and anything they build is 1st class at a fair price . There is USA company making High Walls but cost is over $3000 ....

As a teenager, I really wanted a Ruger no. 3 in .45-70. Not sure why I never purchased one. I've always liked single shot rifles. Now, I would really love a High Wall in .45 Colt, .38-55, or .45-70. If they built one in .44 Mag, I would probably grab it up quick as I currently hand load for that caliber and have lots of nice Starline brass. They are pretty reasonably priced at $892 from Bud's with free shipping. It is very tempting.

Pedersoli make a super High Wall in 38-55 . Here is a pic of my BP shooting buddy of 40 yr winning 1st place in AZ state championship shoot with a Pedersoli smooth bore flint .

Very nice. I don't believe I have even seen a Pedersoli in person. Maybe once at a cowboy action competition my wife and I watched. Most were probably Uberti's.

We are anticipating the release of the 30644 sometime in April. Midway USA and Cheaper than Dirt are good places to get them. See these links.

earlier this morning I received the following update from Barnes :

"Looking at the schedule – it would appear they are in the final stages of production. I expect their release in the next week or two.

Thanks, Ty"

with the full realization that I will probably never hunt something for which this 400 gr bullet is required, I do plan to order a box or two .... having them will pretty well fill all of my (current) wants for bullets to have on hand
