What did you do at your reloading bench today?

Yesterday I loaded up some test loads in 327 Fed Mag using the Hornady 85 grain XTP and both AA-9 and 2400. I’m looking for a soft shooting but accurate load for my Ruger Single Seven. I also have some 100 grain Hornady’s loaded with 296 to try out but I expect this load to be more stout. I want to use the 100 gr in my Henry rifle in the same caliber. Even the stout Federal 100 grain factory load is nothing in that sweet shooting rifle.

Heading up to the range tomorrow to give these a try.

Yesterday I loaded up four test loads in 327 Fed Mag using the Hornady 100 XTP. The only data I could find for any powders I had on hand was for Win 296 and that was only for the 100 gr not the 85 gr that I wanted to use. The only manual I have that even had data for the caliber was my Hornady X edition. I looked for some published data online and both the Hornady manual and the online data really liked Accurate Arms #9. Also I wanted to give 2400 a try but couldn’t find any data.

So I did make up the 100 grain loads and went to the LGS and picked up a pound of AA-9. $42 bucks plus tax.

Doing more looking I did find some published data using 2400 and the 85 grain Hornady so I’ll load up some more using both the AA-9 and the 2400. I get to pick up my S&W M/63 this coming Saturday and I wanted to do some more work with the Single Seven at the same time as I do some shooting/testing with the Smith.

They have data for the 327 Federal Magnum in their pistol section, nothing listed for 2400, although not sure what other powder you are seeking data for.

Ran a six shot ladder test of the Win 244 and berry's 148grn HBWC,
4.9, 5.0, 5.1, 5.2 grains of powder.

4.9, was about 2.5 inches at 50
5.0 was about 2.25, a tad shorter.
5.1 was an inch aside from my flier,
5.2 opened up to 2.25 again.

I'll test this with a few more rounds to see if it is repeatable, but it looks like 5.1 grains of w44 @ an average of 1181.9 fps. I think out past 50 yards, it'll fall subsonic and likely lose accuracy and stability, but out to fifty yards, it's a pretty pleasant load. It's not subsonic, but I think I'll give it a go.

Thanks Mags, I had not seen this page prior. It does agree with the data I found elsewhere so that’s reassuring, I always like to have two or more sources for data that agree. Shot my test loads yesterday and the AA-9 shot much softer. The 2400 had quite a bit of muzzle blast and flame easily seen in the daylight. So I’m leaning to the AA-9 as I’m looking for a soft shooting load for general plinking. Thanks again for the link.

You're welcome. It does sound like #9 is the better choice for mild loads.

I picked up a box of Hornady FTX 225 grain bullets for the .44 mag X-Model. I wanted to make up a dummy round to check function so trimmed a case to the recommended 1.255" and went to seat a bullet....and made a discovery. Don't attempt to seat an FTX with a flat faced seater plug.
It doesn't take much pressure on the plastic tip of the bullet to cause it to sink in the cavity. Luckily I also had a set of Hornady dies with a seater that works.
My Henry is very touchy about loaded cartridge length that exceeds SAAMI spec. The OAL of the FTX dummy cartridge is 1.645" and it cycles like butter. So, I'll make up a small batch of these with H110 and see what she does at the range.

Bullseye, 8.5 grains for the sierra put 1st round at 1060, 2nd at 1100ish.

9.5grains for remmington. Puts first round at 990, and second round at 1070.

Oddly, those numbers are similar whether i use my m38 or my cz557

The next goal is to load both to 1600fps, but I need more modeling data to do that.

My deer season is done, So back to the bench. Today, I've loaded 20 243 Win using 85 grain Speer and 35.5 gr. of Varget. I've been using H4831SC with that bullet in my Long Ranger and doing OK with 1.5" to 2.0" or so groups, but the grouping was inconsistent load to load. I wanted to see if I could improve on that.

Meanwhile I inherited some reloading components some years ago from a friend who passed away, He had about 60 Nosler .270 Silver Tips at 130 grain. So this year, I used them to develop a nice load for my 270 WSM using H4350 and a non-magnum primer. 1-inch groups at 100 and very consistent. I used that load to take four deer this year down in NC. All about 160 to 180 yds and no need to go looking for them. Those bullets are basically regular Nosler BTs with a coating of Lubalox and a silver colored tip. They're great performers. And after shooting almost all of them, my borescope showed no copper.
Nosler hasn't made a new run of those for months, but I'm keeping watch. Meanwhile the regular BTs are available.

Yesterday I pulled the bullets from a couple of dozen 327 fed mags. I’m changing up the powder type and these were left over test loads with various powders. Interesting I couldn’t find a bullet puller collet in the .312 diameter needed. I contacted RCBS tech line and got an immediate response telling me they didn’t have a .312 collet available but suggested I give the 32/8mm size a try. Since I already had one on hand I first tried a .308 collet and while it did pull the bullet it scored it pretty bad and I wanted to reuse them. Found a 32 collet at Sportsman’s Warehouse on clearance sale and it worked perfectly.

Also I wanted to check the trigger on my Ruger 10/22 LVT. Some seem to come with the improved BX 25 trigger and some seem to not have the better trigger. Based on the trigger pull I figured that mine was not the BX. So I pulled it out and sure enough based on very limited information from Ruger with a side by side pic of the two mine is not the BX.

One of my least favorite jobs, in truth I absolutely despise it, prepping LC 5.56 cases, about 1k of them at that.
LC is the only brass Ill reload and since there is no shortage of it iys easily collected at the range.
When I say prep I mean prep. I start with cleaning. Dont have a wet tumbler so I soak in scalding hot water with Lemishine, sea salt and some dish liquid. Rinse, dry. Anneal. Resize and deprime. Measure and trim all to hopefully to the same 1.755" and chamfer and deburr. Swage primer pockets. And finally do the primer pockets and flash holes. Done.
This is not a fun operation, at all, but loadung and shooting tiny little groups is so I do it anyway.
