Winchester 300g 45/70 JHP Reload Formula
We are getting ready to start reloading 45/70 from all the once fired factory brass that we have collected over the past couple of years. Our 45/70 Henrys do really well with Win 300g JHP, so we thought we'd start out trying to copy that round as our first attempt. I think Winchester is using a Sierra bullet (Pro-Hunter 45Cal /.458" 300g HP Flat Nose #8900) and I think I might have read somewhere in the past that they use IMR 4198 powder. Anybody know for sure?

i can't tell you if is it sure, but sierre bullet seem's very similar, and it is 300gr jhp ....
i have bought 150 bullet like this and it was possible to me find 2 pound of imr 4198 in shop (now it is not possible in Europe , this powder is no more imported
GRRRR !)
According to lyman, it is IMR 4198 that give better results with sierra 300gr ....
i have not tested yet, because waiting my henry 45-70 !
see y soon...

Tad I used the Nosler bullet with the 4198 got great groups at the low end around 41 to 42 grains of it. Mine was out of the All Weather model. I know thats not the queston you asked but its a FYI comment.

Thanks Al, we also have a box of Berry copper plated 350grnrs and a jar of Unique that we will probably try in the future, too. I think that was one of your favorites, too, right?BigAl52 wrote:Tad I used the Nosler bullet with the 4198 got great groups at the low end around 41 to 42 grains of it. the bullet Al mentions in his comment above is a joint venture between Winchester and Nosler ... hence it being known as 300 Grain CT (Combined Technology) Ballistic Silver Tip with Cannelure .... they perform exceptionally well in our CCH 45-70 .... should you like any more info, here's a link to where we purchase them ...BigAl52 wrote:Tad I used the Nosler bullet with the 4198 got great groups at the low end around 41 to 42 grains of it. I do like the Berrys 350 plated. I used those with 16 grains of Universal Clays. I dont see why Unique would not work. I did try Unique before I gave Universal a try. But I think I was in the 14 grain range and didnt push it anymore. I would check the books but I think one could push it higher as Universal and Unique are almost the same burn rate. So I may just not have hit the sweet spot with Unique.

H4198 works great with wide variety of .458 guns 45-70 Marlin Level loads the 458 SOCOM and the 450 Marlin very consistent low SD in velocity and one of the best I have used for the 300 grain HP bullets. Start with the low end work your way up and you will find the sweet spot for your COL and brass and primers.

Regarding the plated 350 Berrys, I've settled on 17.4 grains of Trailboss as my load to shoot Big Boar lever action Silhouette. It gives me a very consistent 1140 or so fps MV out of my 1895cb.
