GAs check or no on Lead bullets in my 45 Henry

I just started shooting nothing but lead from my New Henry 45 colt. Speeds around 1000-1200fps. As far as leading is it necessary to have gas checks on bullets since the 500 I bought don't have them? The Oregon trail has some with gas checks at Midway but the grain I want is backordered now.

As long as the bullet to bore size is correct you shouldn't have any problems. Any faster than 1200 or so might be a need for gas checks. I'm running 405 Oregon Trail bullets out of a 45-70 at 1350 with no issues I've noticed.

If these are the Laser Cast variety you are fine in the 1300 + FPS range. These are incredibly hard bullets and are the most accurate I have ever shot out of my guns. Probably the best hard cast bullets on the market - IMHO.

Unfortunately no. These are Rimrock bullets. I have notification set at Midway to buy the Laser cast when back in stock.

OK I misunderstood and thought you WERE shooting the LC. Do the Rimrock bullets have any kind of rating or limits on FPS to be loaded at?

Lube is just as important as the proper size for the bore. You should be shooting .001 over the bore size of the rifle. Gas checks shouldn't be needed if the bore size is correct and as long as your velocity doesnt exceed 1100 to 1300 fps. Some my claim a higher FPS but most generally I wouldn't exceed the 1100 fps mark. If you want to hot rod the 45 colt I would use jacketed bullets. Al

I had a nice Marlin '94 Cowboy limited with a 24" barrel. All my lead bullet reloads leaded the barrel. It was a .357 and I was loading it up hot with 158 grainers so they were really sizzling out of that long tube.
I finally switched to jacketed bullets. (Never found a load that was accurate in that rifle and sold the pretty thing)
My Henry .44 gets copper fouling from jacketed bullets, so I will be scrubbing and scrubbing if I shoot it a lot.
I may work up 1150 fps cast bullet loads for this .44 magnum. Once I get my loading bench and all the other stuff gathered up, that is. I'm pretty bad for procrastinating as I get older.

Conax, I’ve got a 7 mm mag that shot pretty much nothing but Barnes copper bullets. I used every cleaner I had on hand with no luck. I got some Butchs Bore shine from Acadamy and ran a few saturated patches through the rifle and let it sit overnight. Ran about 3 clean patches through the next morning and it was spotless. I was at a gunsmith friend of mine and he ran a Bore Camera through it and said no copper at all. Montana Extreme wouldn’t touch it.

Powder coat your own lead bullets and you can shoot them up to 2000 fps velocity.

I just went buffalo ammo and reloading, Amazon, brownells, and Midway USA. Checked prices on 5 lbs of lead- bullet mold- lee lead melter- ladle- flux and sizing die and lube. All are within 20-30 $ of each other. Looks like initial cost around $300.00. Does that sound about right? Could cast in a 20 lb Dutch oven and dip but Lee drip heater only $69.00. Seems cheaper to buy if 7000 grains is equivalent to a lb of lyman#2 lead. I may be miscalculating.
