Fri. the 13th component score.

Post by Vaquero » Fri Sep 13, 2024 7:52 pm

Well, it's been a rainy day here today and was off work. ;)
So I decided to make my 100 mile gun shop trip, that's the round trip.
Three shops that sell reloading supplies, it's a large triangle.
Either of them are 35-40 miles from the house, anyway.
Go to the first one, and I got their last 800 CCI LPP's, $9'.70 per 100.
Not great but not bad for today's pricing.
Hey, Al I handled one of the S&W 1854's, trigger was a little heavy but crisp.
Actually looks a little better in person. ;)
I said something about I'd rather have a 357 or a 45 Colt, the owner was standing there and walked over to the other counter and returned with a zip-loc bag with 7 rounds of 45 Colt. Said they were in a gun they took in on trade, says you reload here take 'em.

Second stop which is on the same hwy that leads to today's last stop.
They had one of the 1854's also but the trigger seemed a tad heavier, and was $100 higher. But,
They had three lbs. of Red dot, at............$49.99 each, yeah they followed me out the door. ;)

And lastly, I found one lonely lb. of Unique, but ouch!! $60.99, but it and a lb. of H335 for $40.99 jumped on the counter.
We got to talking about prices and how much it's not as economical to load as it once was.
I said, it depends on some of what you shoot, such as some of the old and odd calibers I shoot.
Was looking at his ammo and came across some Fed. 444 Hammer down ammo, it's a 270 gr pill.
Looks similar to the old Speer 270 Deep Curl, anyway, $55.99 a box, yep I got one to try at some point.

Was a good day I'd say.
Billfold is a little lighter though. ;)

So what was your impression of the Smith in person? Ammo and guns could be getting a 6.5 percent excise tax here in Colorado. Wont know for a couple months. Ill leave any further details alone

Better than I expected, Al.
Like I said crisp but stiff trigger, would need some stone work like NCG said about the new Marlin.
If I wanted another 44 mag. I'd give it a hard look, but
still prefer the blued steel and walnut to the coated metal and whatever the black stock is.

Sounds like a good time to me Vaquero.
I love making those pilgrimages and having some stuff to show for it. Yeah, sometimes you pay a little more than you could have at other places, but everything is in your house with you right now, and a whole other bunch of doors are open now since you have all those components to work with.

I'd call that a day well spent!
