Solved my no primer problem
Solved my no primer problem
With primers costing arm and a leg I solved my no primer problem. I was shooting my Virginian Dragoon 45 Colt with 8.7 gr of Unique for over 15 years.
So after over 50 thousands rounds through it I figured I would give it a break and tame it down a bit with Trail Boss @ 5.4gr. But now still have 1000 rounds 8.7 Unique. So decided to break down the 1000 rounds.Which gives me 1000 Starline brass with 1000 primers not to mention all the bullets and all that Unique powder.
I started to break them down one at a time with a RCBS bullet puller hammer that I have had for 20 years. Right now I have broken down about 300 rounds. The hammer is now bent a bit. With 700 to go I'm sure a new hammer is in the future. Doing 50 at a time is all my 72 year old hand can handle.
But in the long run I will have 1000 pieces of Starline brass with primers in them plus all the Unique powder from them with no extra cost to me. My Virginian Dragoon will be happier with the tamed load.

Re: Solved my no primer problem
Not to derail this thread too much, forty, other than the .45 Colt, can you mention what guns you use Red Dot with. Thinking of getting some to try. Thanks. I apoligize Nam Vet for butting in.

If you’re going to invest in a new kinetic bullet puller I suggest you take a look at the RCBS Collet type puller. Much faster than the hammer and also much easier to recover the bullet and power. You will need a different collet for each bullet diameter you want to pull. I’ve used both and there is no comparison.

Excellent idea...Will you have to run the cases back thru a sizing and bell mouth die ?

Sorry no Red dot
Oldbrass, no sizing die, just the powder and bullet seating die, and a slight crimp.
Hatchdog, thanks for the tip.

I would have broke them down by pulling the trigger...........Lighter loads. Buy more brass.
