Any experience with loading 32 H&R mag?

Post by Hatchdog » Wed Dec 01, 2021 12:20 pm

I’m getting ready to load for the .32 H&R mag for the first time. I have on hand a couple of boxes of Hornady .312 100 gr XTP-HP’s and looking at the Hornady manual for this bullet in the H&R mag Unique and Blue Dot are two powders recommended that I have on hand. I saw some talk online about using 2400 and H-110 and I have both of those too.

So, has anybody already loading for this caliber and if so, what did you use?

Thanks

What purpose? Hunting, self defense, targets? I load .327 Fed but not that round, but the basics are the same.

What gun?

Good questions John, thanks.

I’m looking for a mild plinking load to use in both a Ruger Single Seven and a Ruger LCR, both .327 Fed Mags. No hunting or self defense requirements. I’m also limited to components currently on hand so that limits me to the 100 gr XTP. I have a notify me at Grafs for the 85 grain but I can load these 100’s down to a pleasant to shoot velocity. And of all the powders listed in the Hornady manual I only have Unique and Blue Dot on hand. I’ll be looking at other data sources which will hopefully expand my powder choices. Eventually I’ll just load a reduced .327 cartridge but for now I don’t have much .327 brass on hand but did score quite a bit of new PRIMED Starline 32 H&R brass. :D

I use my cast 100 gr bullets pushed by 2400-296 or Unique. I don't light load. I load it to the max b y the manuals.

After consulting my manuals I find that I have five powders on hand that have data listed for the Hornady 100 gr XTP. They are;

H110
2400
Unique
Blue Dot
Power Pistol.

I loaded four with each powder using a mid-range load and I will shoot those to see if one powder stands out. If so, I’ll do some laddered loads with that powder and see what falls out.

Looks like I’m on the same path as Kaboomer other than I’m using jacketed bullets and he uses cast.

I load mine up with 9.5 gr of IMR4227 using a 90gr Sierra bullet. Hogdon lists a 100 gr JHP bullet about the same:
Hodgdon H4227 0.312" 1.345" 9.0 980 15,700 CUP 10.0 1,060 19,300 CUP

I have a 100 or so 32H&R brass but still havent found a use for them.
I use 327 for 100gr XTP full house loads and 32s&wl for plinking and small game loads with a 90gr lead swc at around 1100fps from rifle.

One day I will get around to trying the 32H&R with mid level jacketed loads using the 60 & 85gr XTP.
I do like using different brass for different power levels as it saves any confusion. Should they somehow get mixed up you can tell visually what the load is just by the brass it is loaded in.

I did get given a couple of boxes of 32sw, they will also fire and eject from the henry but are to short to feed. I have only fired a couple and you could see them traveling down range with the light in the right place. A bit like a bb gun but probably not as fast

I’ve only tried 32 H&R with Unique and Lil’ Gun from a 20” Henry.

10.5gr of Lil’ Gun produced an avg 1400 fps using 100gr XTPs

4.3gr of Unique produced an avg 680 fps which was a waste of a bullet.

I’ve got some 71gr 32 ACP bullets I’ve been wanting to experiment with 32 H&R brass but haven’t gotten around to it.

I got some H&R mag brass to load for my Ruger LCR .327. That little thing is hard to handle with .327 Fed Mag. I can get on target much better with the HR's and feel comfortable with it's performance. I've heard it said that the HR mag is about the same in performance as the .38 special.

Jake,

I’m in the same boat with my LCR. The Federal .327 85 grain factory ammo is manageable but the H&R is so much more pleasant in that little guy. Thanks everybody for your input, I’m heading to the range today to give five different powders a try, hopefully one will rise above the others and then I can work on some laddered loads.
