Magnum primers in 38 special ?

Post by Oldbrass » Thu Dec 31, 2020 2:11 pm

My friend bless his heart actually found me some small pistol primers, only problem is they're MAGNUM. I'm a stickler for following established data, however I'm tossing the question out here due to the shortage. my only pistol powder is my 9 pounds of unique. I understand it's a sensitive topic to discuss on a reload forum.

If you were not using maximum recommended charge weights of Unique, I would not worry too much. The Magnum primers are hotter, so they can detonate slower burning powders. Some people start out by reducing their load a few tenths of a grain when using Magnum Pistol Primers for a standard load. The same rule of thumb applies if you are using small rifle primers to reload handgun cartridges.

I tend to agree .... if the ammo will be used in a 38 special, I'd hesitate to start with a max load .... if the ammo is going to be used in a 357, I wouldn't be as concerned .... this isn't the first time I've seen a primer shortage .... while I do recommend folks follow the specs, I admit not always doing so .

You will be fine with Unique and Red Dot from what I found from my own test and some other Hand Loader magazine tests I read.
All I have are Magnum primers and have seen little to no difference in bullet speeds or deviation and accuracy.

I also agree. I would use them and not even think twice about it.
