Nosler Solid Bullets 458 Caliber 500 Grain Flat Nose
don't know if it will come to anything or not but I sure hope so .... for reloading jacketed bullets, we use those made by Nosler .... they only list one 300 grain option for use in a 45-70 .... http://www.nosler.com/nosler-load-data/45-70-gov-sao/ .... in looking through a new Nosler reloading manual, I noted that they offer a Nosler Solid Bullets 458 Caliber (458 Diameter) 500 Grain Flat Nose bullet .... http://www.midwayusa.com/product/988746 ... -box-of-25 and http://www.nosler.com/solid-bullet/ .... after seeing that they only provide loading data for its use in 458 Lott or Winchester, I sent their customer service an email asking about using it in a 45-70 .... their response was as anticipated, that they didn't have any but they directed me to call their tech support at 1-800-285-3701 ext. 1046 to see if they have any recommendations .... the fellow I spoke with listened and promised to pass it on to their folks who do the testing and develop their load recommendations .... he seemed interested in hearing that there are folks out here with Henry rifles who would be interested in having an option of a 500 gr jacketed bullet .... if there are any others folks who would like to have such an option, it wouldn't hurt to call and let them know ....

It is fun to have on hand some of those "maybe-never-to-be-used" bullets.
I have some strong ones for my .357 revolver, and possibly may use those if I ever decide to hunt for whitetail deer with a handgun: HSM Bear Ammo 158gr LRN FPGC or Doubletap 180gr Hard Cast FNGC. I’ve tried both in my SP101 revolver, and they let you know what recoil means!
These also worked fine in my Henry .357 BBB...of course, much less recoil.
And I had some specialty, hard-hitting shotshells for the 12-ga shotgun I used to own. Since I recently bought my new 20-ga Benelli Nova Pump Field, I'd like to find some of these "interesting" shotshells again. I'll not get them for hunting whitetail deer, but just for fun to try out and see what the ammo does --- maybe against wooden doors or some cinder block! I think some of the ammo made nowadays would be too strong to put against my "soft" black steel targets.
Here is one Herters shotshell I tried in my Benelli 12-ga. This ammo is listed on the Cabelas web site. Click on the "View larger" link to get a good look at what this shotshell carries!!
HERTERS Multidefense Shotshells — The ultimate knockdown power with a 0.65" round lead ball, backed by six No. 1 buckshot pellets. 12 ga.

Even though I don't reload, reading about the stuff many of you guys work on is most enlightening and interesting.
Have a great day!

understood on the appeal of unorthodox loads .... I still have a few WWII 30-06 armor piercing and tracer rounds .... I have a few 20 ga paper 2.5" #4 high brass shells along with a variety of vintage 12 ga buckshot and slugs .... similar to your link I've seen a variety of interesting innovation in 410 shells which seem to be in demand for use with Judge revolvers .... putting in a plug again from the opening post in this thread, I hope some folks interested in 45-70 will consider calling the tech support number at Nosler and voicing interest in them developing a load for using their 500 grain'er

update :
earlier today I made a followup call to Nosler .... unfortunately, their test showed that their 500 grain Flat Nose solid cannot be seated deeply enough into a 45-70 shell and still have space for a proper powder charge .... I've asked if they might consider coming up with a 400+ grain solid bullet, he stated that they simply haven't found a sufficient market .... I mentioned the popularity of Henry's 45-70 and requested that they give it further consideration .... they were very nice and easy to work with but I don't hold out much hope

Worth a try. The lever action 45-70 seems to be growing dramatically.
