Ordered a new chronograph today...

To replace my old F1 chrony that quit. Going to try the Magneto Speed Sporter and see how it runs. Has some great reviews and believe a member here has one. Got it thru Cabela's and had some discount club credit to use so saved me 55 bucks off the price and be here in couple days. Also saved me an 85 mile round trip to their store!

I have the V3 magneto FS. Its a great Chrono for bolt action and black guns. Mounting on a lever action with a tube magazine is problematic however. The only downside the the Magneto vs my Pro Chrono DLX is the convenience of running the chrono on multiple weapons systems without having to re-attach each time.

With my F1 I would always have troubles on bright sunny days. Guess I'll be busy making up adapters to ease install on the lever rifles.

One solution I found that will work is to install the magneto upside down on top of the barrel not underneath, you just have to be careful not to over tighten or you will bend the magazine tube.

When you install it in the normal manner under the muzzle, the mag tube places the Magento too far below the line of fire. It is very fussy in that way and has to be dialed in very close. Frustrating at first, but once you get the system down, not that bad.

My old F1 I purchased last century is still going, will replace it when it eventually dies but while every it continues to function I will keep using it,

I still have/use my old F1, it's the green one. I don't even remember when I bought it. Just put a new battery when needed and have at it. I like the portable display, at least I can see it!

???? The MagnetoSpeed sensor works 100% perfectly on a lever action, you just unthread the strap, slide it through the gap between barrel and mag tube, rethread it through the buckle and tighten it all the way down, with the unit at 90 degrees to one side or the other.

Don’t strap it around the tube, that is in now way good idea!!! Even if you installed a shim in that gap to prevent flexing,it could still distort or crush the thin tube.

I really like my V3, it is a dandy and very easy to use. I HIGHLY recommend this chronograph. The only thing that you have to fuss with is the sensitivity. If you don’t get a reading adjust it higher (bigger number) from the default setting of 2. I was unable to get it to read my .17 HMR at all until I raised it to 6. Once set and recording, it is wonderful. I haven’t tried syncing data to my laptop, I just take a picture with my phone’s camera and annotate it later. If you are testing factory ammo, set the box close by so the label shows in the pic, and you will have all the info you need as a reference,

I stand corrected, I should have mentioned that all of my 3 Henry Levers are Octagon Barrels. There is not enough gap between the tube and barrel to thread the strap. I should have been more specific.

I have a 1967 vintage Winchester 30/30 that it work fine on.

interesting chronograph .... prior to reading this thread and going to YouTube I'd only seen a Magneto Speed Sporter in sales ad .... it appears to be a solid unit

I am assuming you are jesting, a .50 BMG is around 13,000 ft lb.

That is for my 17” Henry X .44 Mag carbine. It is a near max load for that bullet with AA9. You can get a little more fps with a different powder (or a longer barrel). You can calculate Muzzle Energy at any number of online calculators. Like this one.

I used to carry a Super Redhawk Alaskan .480 Ruger (2.5” barrel) when I rode a dual sport bike in grizzly bear country along the ID/ MT border, my carry load was a hard cast flat nose at 1100 fps (subsonic) and coincidentally it’s ME almost exactly matched this .44 Mag carbine load. It was a whole lot more uncomfortable to shoot tho.
