Cabelas blew it.. No sale

Went by Cabelas after work for 30-30 reloading bullets and thought I'd snoop the gun rack. They had a used Henry 357 lever for $479. It's the brass receiver with short octagon barrel(sorry don't know model) looked down the bore with cell phone light it looks good. Rifle just needs a cleaning. Now the Rant: the action & trigger are locked, I asked the salesman to unlock it So I could cycle the action and he said "It's against store policy" I was dumbfounded.I Said "I'll buy it today Just wanna check it out" again was told no. Handed him his rifle back and left just out of principle. If anyone's interested there's a used Henry 357 at Cabelas in Lacey,WA for $479

I've heard of other locations where this has been the policy but I've never actually experience it

The sad part is someone will come along and buy it without checking it out.

Good for you. I'd have done the same, probably a comment.

Now if you bought it and something in the action wasn't right wouldn't Henry take care of it under warranty?
Some years ago I bought a Uberti 1873 rifle at a LGS. It was used and everything functioned and looked good. Got it home and found that there was a
problem with the ejector. I called up Stoeger who had imported it and they told me to send it in and they would fix it under warranty.
Got it back and it has worked ever since. Got a good deal on it buying from an "AR" type gun shop!

Thanks! It shoots really well with the 24 inch barrel. I went to that shop for another item and saw it hanging on the wall and it came home with me!
It sort of stood out surrounded with those "Black" rifles all around!

Some guy needed some bucks and sold it to them.

I have the 357 yellow boy Henry and it's a heavy heavy rifle. Fun to shoot but not to carry very far.

I would have asked to speak to the manager, explained that I didn't want to jump thru the state and federal paperwork hoops nor pay the fees without first checking the action, but I wasn't a looky loo, I was a definite buyer as long as there were no issues. You understand there are policies, but why go thru the hassles of the return, when cycling the action can prevent it.
If he reinforced the policy is policy stance, I would have thanked him politely, and told him that it's fine, local stores need business, gun stores, fishing stores, camping stores,....

One of my sons worked for Cabelas when he was going to college, he said they head some policies he thought were strange. But it was drummed into them to follow store policy.

When I went looking for a Rossi .45 Colt Ranch Hand at the local gun shop he had 2 in stock and one was the CCH which I selected.
I checked it out and cycled the action and all looked good. Got it home and it would not feed any of my ammo thru the action. Looked to be a problem with the lifter coming up to high of angle.
I took it back and returned it for the other one which was blued BUT this time brought along some dummy loads. I let them cycle the rounds thru the rifle before I bought it and all was fine. Don't think a big box store would do that.
Did same deal when shopping for a Marlin (Remlin) 1895 GS at a larger local shop where they had 6 rifles. I had them lay them out on the counter and picked the best one of bunch from fit and finish AND had them cycle some of my dummy .45-70 rounds thru it.

Yup, but management can waive things, change prices, give discounts, etc.
The Cabelas, Bass Pro in our area in VA were good to work with. Especially if you were a good customer. We went into the Bass Pro outside Richmond, and they didn't have the sale item in the flyer, but the dept manager discounted the next higher item. He admitted they only shipped three of the sale item, but two dozen of the next higher model. (Bait Casting Reel). I bought two.

Have experienced that and MUCH worse when trying to buy a gun from Cabela's, even before Bass Pro took over. Will NEVER buy a gun from them, again.

Did you ever shop at Green Tops which was right near Bass Pro? They moved into the old Gander Mt. store and that's where I bought my Marlin.

I shopped in Greentop since the early 70s when I moved to VA as a teen. As a Dept firearms instructor I bought gear and ammo from them, and several of our officers worked there off duty. I bought a lot of guns from them over the years, including my Smith 340 357 snubby, Kimber Tactical Ultra II, and the CZ Scoped 22 squirrel sniper rifle. I bought the Mossberg Shockwave 12g from the new store.
I don't want to think what I spent over the years on fishing gear.
Town Police and Southern Police Equipment got the rest of that money.

As fortyshooter said earlier, if there was anything wrong with it, I"m sure Henry would take care of it.

Yes I'm most certain of that as Henry warranty is top notch. The issue for me is the store wouldn't let me inspect the rifle

I agree with both ..

.. while I have no doubt that Henry would make it right, I would be hard pressed to buy if I couldn't closely inspect the firearm, including working the action .... the only exceptions to that might be if it is priced at a ridiculously low price of if really wanted one and couldn't find it anywhere else

I asked for a price check on a pistol over the phone, they told me the same thing it's against store policy.
