Our local USAF base finally sells guns and ammo

Post by GunnyGene » Sat Sep 05, 2020 6:32 pm

Yeah, Team! This was supposed to happen back around Apr/May, but they just got their FFL late last week. Stopped by the Exchange this morning, and they were still stocking the displays so not much out to look at yet, but a fairly decent selection of Glock, Sig, S&W, & Ruger in the most popular calibers. A couple bolt guns. And some ammo and various accessories. Prices seemed competitive with the local shops in Columbus, but no taxes or NICS fee.

On hand selection isn't all that important, since patrons can order from the On-LIne AAFES site and have it shipped for free to the local Exchange for pickup.

Anyway, I'm glad to see it happen finally. :D

They've been selling guns and ammo at our local exchange at Charleston AFB for a few years. I've usually done better at a LGS. I do wish I had picked up the Rock Island 1911 that they had on clearance. I had recently gotten my Springfield Range Officer for several hundred less than the Exchange price, so I wasn't in the market. At around $300 on clearance, I should have picked up the Rock Island.

Ft.Campbell, KY, has been selling guns, ammo for several yrs.
Haven't bought any guns, but did pick up some cheap ammo, last time I was there. No tax, etc.
Need to get back up there. Hour & 1/2 drive from here tho.
I rarely ever buy a rifle, but when I do, it's a Henry.

Oh man, $300 I would have been all over that.

Here's the list of bases that have an FFL. (note that not all of them accept store pickup from AAFES on-line sales, and USN/USMC stores are not included, although most will have a gun counter).

Stopped in today to see how it was going. Starting to look like a real gun shop, except for no smith services. Ammo display is filling up pretty good, pistol counter is full, rifle carousels are full with a variey of nice long guns on display. And got a peek in the back room - looked like they had another 300+ firearms on the shelfs in boxes. Bought a couple boxes of 9mm Sig 124grn V-Crown jhp - $15/20 but no sales tax or shipping of course. One other guy in AF uniform was picking up a Beretta 92F which he said was his (upcoming) retirement gift to himself. :D

Interesting where they are getting supplies. Most stuff on the East coast still "out of stock".

No doubt they buy it from distributors, and likely have priority and a discount over civilian retail stores. Basing this on the prices I've seen on-line and locally. The Sig V-Crown ammo I picked up today is nearly $1/Round less than what you'd pay on-line according to Ammoseek and that doesn't take into account shipping or sales tax, and very few of the on-line sellers have any 9mm at all.

The Sig store has this for 19.95/20 +9.95 shipping, which works out to 1.49/round. More if they tack on local Sales Tax.

I was at Bass Pro on Sunday and they had tons of 9 mm, but not a single box of .30-30 and many other calibers were lacking too. I bought a box of .357 for the BBSC and a bunch of 12 gauge as we are at the start of duck season.

I've noticed that availability (and prices) are very unevenly distributed around the country or even within local areas. Not surprising actually. Dog eat dog environment for ammo throughout the supply chain, and the biggest dog eats first.

Gunny, having that base gear up like you mentioned, is a very good thing. Another "LGS" is always a good thing for us like minded folks.
Good for them.

Redthies, hows that 930 doing? Took mine out last weekend for some upland chasing. Shoots good.

It is. But at the same time, they have to compete for product from the same distributors as every other retailer in the country. In this case they only deal with RSR for guns and ammo. They're like the Amazon of gun stuff, but only for dealers - no retail at all.

I’m loving the 930. I took a turkey and Grouse with it on a recent trip. I will say that a turkey choke and #4 shot in a Nitro Turkey load is a bit sporty for Grouse. It was a “reaction” shot when my Weimaraner flushed one. Probably my best wing shot ever. It was only about 10 yards away going past my side. The shot hit it like a laser (at that range I bet it’s a TIGHT shot column!), and there was literally nothing left from the breast down. Not a single pellet went though the breasts either! I’ll be taking it out for waterfowl regularly now. I also bought a FN manufactured Winchester 101 for upland, and a Tristar 20 gauge O/U “for my wife”.

Wow, in your first pic that sure is a big grouse and a small Weimaraner!l (sorry, I just couldn’t make myself stop  )

Nice job of pulling the breast out of that grouse with your shot. :D Now that is a mixed bag! (Insert thumbs up here)

Yup. She’s WAY bigger than she looks! We actually got two turkeys, but one was already in the freezer from the night before I took the photos. I took the other one with my Ruger American Rimfire .22 LR. It was great to break in both guns with a bird as I bought them both for turkeys.
