I came across this bit of trivia while doing research on something else, and thought I'd share it here, I found it very interesting.

Military folks will recognize that new LTs fresh out of training are called "Shavetails.". Anyone know why, where the term comes from? Ranch Roper?

y'all feel free to ADD other questions to the thread... Keep it rolling along, I can't be the only one who likes unique trivia.

I’m guessing from the ranch Roper hint that this has something to do with horses and their backsides.

don't know if this is actually the origin or not ....many years ago I remember watching a B - Western in which they had a newly broken pack mule that was giving them fits .... to mark him they shaved is tail .... later in the movie a young, new Lieutenant was referred to as a shavetail

I actually found the information somewhere else, in a true military context, just can't remember where. I think they also used this trick on large cattle drives in the old west... New inexperienced riders were placed on shaved tailed horses to mark them to all at first glance so they wouldn't be assigned tasks beyond their abilities in the press of the day.

Why is 2 star general called a major general and a 3 star general called a lieutenant general?

I never made sense of that either.

Here is something I just learned at Tiger Rescue. What can't big cats do (lions, tigers, leopards, etc ) that smaller cats can do ( cheetahs, bobcats, domestic cats). Has nothing to do with their physical attributes that you might think of.
