D-Day Remembrance

Allied Forces landed in France on this date in 1944 to preserve freedom for the world. More than 200,000 allied soldiers gave their lives in the process.

a day we most certainly should remember .... sorry to see (but not the least bit surprised) at the lack of related movies being shown today

Not much is said or taught about WWII in schools anymore. Sure is a shame if you ask me. It needs to be.

I can only imagine how surreal it must have felt later to those who survived the beach landings. They deserve to be honored and remembered, one and all.

My father provided air cover for the D-Day landings. Certainly a traumatic experience but he ALWAYS deferred to the horror of the boys on the beach. He later told me that in low passes he could really see the landing boats and brave Marines, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard boys "really catching hell." His words.

one of my Uncles parachuted in the day before to cut communications lines .... I learned that from my aunt, I never heard him mention it

I did not know that the Marines and Coast Guard went in on D Day.
My Father and two of his brothers went in at Normandy not sure which day. while a younger brother landed in southern France.. One Brother in law jumped with the Airborne the night prior.
Another Uncle was a Tank Commander on Iwo Jima, and one more was in the Tippets B29 squadron as a Navigator.
Also some other brothers in law served.

Coast Guard personnel piloted the Higgins Boat landing crafts along with a number of USCG cutters offshore. Also, the rescue craft were all Coast Guard.
