Tired Dog

An old, tired-looking dog wandered into the yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home.
He followed me into the house, down the hall, and fell asleep on the couch.
An hour later he went to the door, and I let him out. The next day he was back, resumed his position on the couch and slept for a hour.
This continued for several weeks, Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: "Every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap."
The next day he arrived with a different note pinned to his collar: "He lives in a home with 4 children--he's trying to catch up on his sleep.
Can I come with him tomorrow? "

When they want some peace they will find it! Lot of times Buster will go rest/nap in the living room while we are in the den watching TV.
Sometimes in the morning after we all get up and while making breakfast he will slip off into our bedroom and be huddle on the bed for a quick nap before breakfast.
Best of all his favorite "human game" when he is sitting next to me in the big recliner rocker and I have to get up...he will switch places in the chair
and see if I notice when I return!

When my brother was dying of Cancer he would stay at his house alone when he felt he could.
There was this old yellow cat that would come to his patio door in the late afternoon and meow to be let in. Then he would
curl up beside him and take a nap. Later in the evening he would ask to be let out, and he would be
back the next evening. He was never fed by my brother. He just came and kept him company.
I think sometimes animals just know.

I'm sorry that you lost your brother to cancer, Coop. My wife of 44 years died of cancer almost three years ago. It's a horrible disease that profoundly affects entire families and their friends.

Your post reminded me of Stephen King's Dr. Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, in which he wrote about a cat named Azzie, who sensed when a person had a terminal illness and behaved just like your brother's afternoon visitor. I hope your brother might have somehow been comforted by that "old yellow cat".

Our animals are often smarter than we think they are. I have 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels let me know how smart they are all the time.

He was an animal lover. They had a little dog and every time he took it to the vet he cried more than the dog. The dog had passed and I think the cat gave him a lot of pleasure.
