What do the personal mask actually prevent?
The ones you make or buy made of cotton material. From what I read they might trap 5% of airborne virus particles as compared to a
N95 mask. So if someone has the homemade type and coughs or sneeze would there still be a good bunch of virus blowing thru?
I have several of the N95 type I bought last year from Home Depot for use when cutting grass or working with leaves and had a couple
left that I wear now when going into a store. I figure a used N95 might be better than the other type.

I plan on using a magic marker to put a Frito Bandito mustache on my mask.
Several stores now insist that you wear one to come in.

I have read that it also interferes with normal breathing and can negatively affect and weaken your lungs with prolonged use. My wife and I won't wear one. If a store wants us to, we shop somewhere else.
Luckily around here most places seem to be normal. Must be weird in cities.

Like a lot of things, the whole mask thing has turned political.

It depends on which state you live in as to the rules. I haven't been in a store to buy something in 1 1/2 months.RanchRoper wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2020 9:56 amI have read that it also interferes with normal breathing and can negatively affect and weaken your lungs with prolonged use. Our Gov'nr is going to "allow" things to open up in stages starting Friday. My daughter-in-law plans to reopen her hair salon Friday and there was a list
of rules she has to follow to stay open. Everyone including customers have to wear mask and the hair stylist will work on different days to stagger the appoiments and keep distance between hair stations. Lots of other rules too.

Since it has been found that the virus can be spread by people that don't even know they have been infected, Public masks are to keep the people wearing them from infecting other people.
It is really the only polite way to appear in public.
If you are not wearing a mask it is like giving a big middle finger everyone.

Re: What do the personal mask actually prevent?
Nothing. I wont shop where they require them. Every time I have been to a store where there are people wearing them some of the masks look like they came out of the oil rag bin and others are worn down below the nose..................Really what good is that.

Re: What do the personal mask actually prevent?
earlier this morning I had to take my wife to our Ophthalmologist's office for a post op visit following yesterday's surgery .... its a large practice with its office in a large building .... when you walk into the front door, they have a desk setup where you check-in and they screen you for Covid-19 .... nobody goes past that desk without a mask .... if you don't have one, they give you one .... after that you don't touch a doorknob, they have a person that opens it for you .... my wife made my mask out of a western bandana .... our oldest son is a Medical Doctor who is exposed daily .... as such he has to wear protective items .... he says that mask do help .... that's all we need to know

The sad part of this are the people who take great pride in ratting out others who don't "follow the rules" of the supposed "new reality". I can't say anything else without causing the thread to get locked.

The Gods of the Copybook Headings
AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.
We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.
We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.
With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.
When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."
On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."
In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."
Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Re: What do the personal mask actually prevent?
I don't go into public places any more often than is absolutely necessary and, when I do, I wear a mask for my neighbors' sake, just in case I have the virus and don't know it. I'll continue to wear one until there's an effective vaccine... could be a long while.
I just bought a dozen large, cotton bandannas from Amazon to use instead of the over the ear masks. Until recently, that wouldn't be acceptable anywhere. Now, it's normal... the new normal.
