Strange Feeling

this morning we drove Walmart for the first time in a couple of weeks .... some outward changes were very clear ..... a long walkway from the parking lot to the entrance has been roped off and private security has been posted to ensure that customers maintain appropriate distance .... inside the store, they had the most registers open that I've seen in a good while .... signs have been placed on the floor of each checkout lane to ensure spacing .... the customer waiting behind the one going through checkout cannot place any items on the counter until the one being checked out moves on ....those things are most definitely planned and make sense .... I have no clue how many but the parking lot was as full as usual and their was a considerable number of folks shopping ... several people were in each isle .... one thing did surprise us .... .... almost no sounds above an occasional whispered conversation .... in short, the store was spooky quiet

That could be the sound of fear from knowing that an asymptomatic shopper in front of or behind or next to you will send you home with more than you intended to pick up at the store. It's been reported that a significant number of those who have Covid-19 may not have any symptoms, but there's no way to tell without testing. In CT, everyone is required to wear a face mask in public to protect the other guy in case you're one those who has it, but don't know it. :(

our Governor has issued the same order for NC .... that said, I didn't make a scientific count but well over half of the people we saw were not wearing mask or gloves .... some did have a mask and no gloves .... others gloves but no mask .... I was surprised at the number of employees who weren't wearing either a mask or gloves

Good to hear plans are underway for the US economy to restart, and people get back to work. Our country will have no choice but to follow suit and get on with business.

Just a little Kipling, suitable for the current times I think.

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return! (Kipling)

They asked us here as well to wear a mask when out. When I go to the store and see people wearing masks I wonder about there intelligence. Wearing a mask and not covering your nose with the mask hardly justifies wearing the mask to begin with. Ive seen it worn that way everytime I have gone to the store by more than one person in the store.

Gloves do not change hand washing conventions.

Wearing a mask is not for your protection it is for others.
The mask is so you don't spread what you don't know you have.

The current protocols for don't really cover asymptomatic people spreading the virus.
What is in place at places of business is only for things like the flu that are only spread by symptomatic people.

I had a similar experience on Friday when I went into the Target store in Bend, the town where I work.

I saw more mask wearing, odd behavior from people since this started.

I attribute this to the particular 'demographic' that probably shops in the larger stores such as this and Wal-Mart.

I drive 20 miles South to my small community, rural surroundings and atmosphere and things (and people) seem more less normal.

Wore a mask for the first time today while running into a few stores looking for hard to find items. They say it's more for the others and not yourself, but I would rather have a mask than no mask. Also learned that it is better to wear glasses, if you have them. I can wear my reading glasses while walking with no problem. Still with both on today, I didn't go anywhere more than I needed to and I avoided people as usual. It's still like a game out there doing that. I still find that somewhat comical.

I now wear a mask when in public as do about 1 in 8 by my last count. I keep wanting to shout boo or say stick em up!

My wife made me an old western type stage coach robbers mask at my request. I thought about saying that today at the store, but realized it would be a good way of getting shot. I kept the comedy to myself instead.

About 50-50 out there today around here. I decided that once I was in the minority or close to it, I would give in. Today was that day.

Have to say that I was really glad to have it.

Try wearing a mask, glasses, and hearing aids. Also, went to Bass Pro for "essentials" and 90% of the guys were not wearing masks, most of the staff were not wearing. Must be a macho thing.

Been watching lots of rodeo on RFD-TV. The best part is all of the videos they show during station breaks. Home videos sent in by farmers. Still at it, planting, seeding, growing, milking, ranching. Very uplifting messages versus the panic stricken regular media and news. We feel so much better since we quit watching the news weeks ago. Sleep better too.

What gets me is how dense a lot of people seem to be about following the social distancing recommendations. Was behind a young guy at Lowes yesterday. They've put up plexiglass shields to protect the cashiers but there's a gap between where the counter begins and the shield starts and this guy is leaning over the counter as far as he can and actually touching the register screen.

Got out the sewing machine I use to stitch up tarps and made a mask for work. Don't want to wear the N95 I wear in stores because of the oil mist at the shop. Ain't Purdy and the seams aren't straight but it will work. I can't wear the masks that loop over the ears because I wear behind the ear hearing aids and glasses.
