The Rancher home craze.....

Wife and I live in a older neighborhood with a lot of the homes being brick ranchers built from 1961 up thru 1970.
The area is surrounded by what's left of wooded land in this part of the city with the river at end of woods down a hill.
Right now Rancher style homes are THE hot ticket for us baby boomers getting up in late 60's and beyond who no longer
want a multi story home as in stairs.
As soon as a rancher in our neighborhood goes up for sale it's a done deal in a couple days and they get good money to.
The negative for us Seniors is that the value increase is running up the real estate taxes too!
We bought our brick rancher back in 1984 and it sits on a corner lot and a half. Have no plans to "cash out" yet.
Don't want to go thru moving again...to much big stuff to move!

Sure, we are looking for a ranch style. Of course they are the most expensive. Now that explains a lot!

Bought my Ranch in 2000. Im not going anywhere but the taxes keep going up for sure with all the increase in home values around here.

Right back where we started! When we first got married we moved into an apartment and rent was 175 a month.
When I take our current real estate tax bill and divide by 12 months...that is just about what we pay in tax per month.
So still paying rent but now to the city! The home is paid for.

Population keeps going up and people need a place to live. A lot of folks are moving out of the big cities for obvious reasons, and looking for a spot on something resembling rural, but close enough to civilization (however they define that) that they have easy access to everything they were used to having, but without the congestion and crime.

We are looking hard at the midwest. We have a daughter in southern OK and a son in east TX, along with their spouses and half our six grandkids. That puts OK, AR, MO, and KS in the running based on various factors. Right now, Missouri and Arkansas are in the lead. We are looking at rural properties with some acreage. Hate to leave the place we worked so hard on... Especially that new woodshop.
But it's time. Put it on the market last week.

BrokenOM that is a nice place you have there and that shop and other buildings icing on the cake...nice shooting berm too!
That would be a tough decision to move from but being near family is always on top of list too.
I assume you taking all your shop equipment along and hope your new place will be as nicely laid out.
Love that 15 acres!

Breaks my heart, but yes, two 26 foot you hauls, plus the titan pulling the trailer with the polaras, and the Frontier pulling the kayak trailer. We will either sell the tractor and it's goodies with the farm, or load them in the uhaul with the woodshop stuff, or pull another trailer with a uhaul. We are looking at 30 - 40 acre properties in the midwest, nothing under 20. We can make do with the tractor we have, but would like to go up a size or two and add a bucket. Too old for lifting. Lol.

When we lived in Virginia we had horses and all the hunting I wanted, but no family. I was a single parent and moved my children back to Minnesota to have them near family. Sold the horses. That hurt.
Now the kids are grown and gone and we live in ten acres of timber on a primitive lake. I remarried twenty five years ago to a really good woman. Our house was a modified Chalet that we built on to. I have a pole barn and a heated wood shop.
Now I'm almost eighty. The place does require some work to keep it up and I'm unsure how many more years I can do it. It's getting so that we have to hire a lot of maintenance and right now we can afford to do that, but who knows about the future.
I'm posting this as a caution to others about getting that big place you always wanted. Sometimes it can be too much.
course We've been here since 1983 so I guess I've gotten my time from God and I thank him daily for that.

Yeah that's the issue....when you get to a point in life where you want to enjoy the woods have time to do so and have a little money to be able to
you are up in age wondering how long you can keep maintaining it all. 10-15 years goes by really quick even when you only 65.

Look for something with a storm cellar out there too!
30-40 acres....sounds like a great plan.

We aren't going to get in deep... We just want insulation. I'd be fine if MOST of the acreage is thickly wooded. Tina wants a couple three cows, goats, and a few chickens. We had horses til the last kid left. Tina rode, trained, and competed, managed barns, etc... Starting around age thirteen. She wss ready to "retire" when the youngest joined the Air Force.
I spent a lifetime being paid to deal with folks. In retirement, we seek peace, and the quiet of nature. Okay, sometimes, the boom of my range.

I will tell you that I hated those chickens. Those damn roosters crowing at the break of dawn got to me after while. They made it into the freezer. Farm fresh eggs are really good though.

If you are like me once you live with the deer in your yard you hate to shoot them anymore.

The wife had about 150 chickens at one time.
Yup, I hated those roosters crowing at the first peek of sunlight, and when you have a dozen, THEY have a competition every morning. Eventually she cut back to about two dozen hens and a pair of roosters. Still crowed.
She has gotten rid of all of it for now. Once we sell, move, and get settled, she will get a half dozen chickens for eggs and one rooster to guard them. Hopefully, with quality windows, I'll barely hear him. Once we put in the triple pane pella windows... It was nice.

It’s nice to be near family but those states are known for some crazy severe weather. Your home is nice and complete with everything you need. Good luck with your decision.
