Major knee surgery

Post by BrokenolMarine » Thu Dec 19, 2019 1:32 pm

:o

All the sudden, the joint was popping out, and butt was dropping towards the floor.
Luckily my baby girl... has four legs. :( A trip to the vet, xrays and several hundred bucks later, and it turns out our happy little Westie had a genetic defect and the femur was crooked and knee cap wasn't tracking. That was ten days ago.

The vet said the ESS word. Surgery. It wasn't going to be in and out snip snip. Major deal. Tuesday, the boss dropped her off at 8am, and they said go away, she'll be spending the night.

The vet shaved the entire leg, opened the joint, and took the femur apart, created a shelf in the straightened bone, pinned it, cut a deeper track for the "patella" and closed. $1,500
We sure luv our pets.

Ten days to suture removal. Four weeks of sedentary rest. (Westies are hyper dogs, this is already a battle of wills.) Ten weeks before she can run and jump and chase things. SHE is not a happy camper. 8-)

Daddy's girl is pouting.

Well we do love our pets. Ive not encounter that Marine but heart issues with Cavaliers are a common issue. Been there done that a couple of times. I wish you well and I hope your daughter recovers to jumping up in your lap again.

That has to be difficult for you to deal with. Hope she is back up jumping around in no time.

Wish you well in keeping her quiet for her recovery. These things must be done for our 4 legged family.

Her favorite spot is guard duty, staring into the back yard from atop her custom crate to bark at the squirrel and deer who DARE to trespass onto her property. Second favorite is either of the two available laps. We took away the steps to the window platform... She pouts about that too.

She seems to be past the intense pain part. This is a double edged sword. Since she isn't "hurting" anymore... she wants to run and jump and play. SHE isn't allowed to do and running around for at least four weeks, and NO jumping and hard play for ten. THAT little gal is a bundle of energy... but the vet doesn't want to drug her too much, it could lead to her putting too much weight on the leg too soon and undoing all the work.
